Olive oil can take some while to work - weeks more than days - depending on how much build up of wax there is. If you can't find an ear doctor and you believe your ears may need syringing, you may be able to purchase an Ear Bulb - a rubber bulb with nozzle - and try to do it yourself.

Oddly, this was a topic of conversation last night when 6 friends met last night and it was discovered that 3 of them were having ear problems at the moment. Seems that in the UK many things are going back to good old fashioned DIY remedies, including syringing.

Dr Shady at Nile Polyclinic Luxor is an ENT doctor. He has one of those mini ear vacuum cleaner gadgets. You'll find the clinic in Fayrouz next door to Dr Michael's pharmacy (in the road opposite the end of Sherif el Rhoda Street). I don't have his phone number, sorry.

A lady member on here ( named - removed) once gave me an Red Indian smoking ear candle thingy once. highly holistic!
It was like a foot long rolled up joint...
And...wait.....She shoved it in my ear and......Wait for it...She set it alight, "I kid you not.
Pretty weird you might think ? No I hear native Red Indians do it all the time.
Does it work ? I would say Yes 100% Fun content ? Weird but try it, it's all down to herbs rolled up into a long joint.
Ps: There is a native red indian in Luxor called Eric, 'What's wrong with Geronimo or Running Bear. Eric ?
I once had a fish called Eric.... 8)

Hopi Indian Ear Candles Doctor. I had some given to me as a present from my daughter. They have their uses but not for heavy wax deposits.

I have one ear which used to need regular syringing and when they stopped doing it at the doctors in the UK I became completely deaf in that ear. No drops of any kind supplied by the chemist worked.

I was recently told about a local chap whose business is to visit people in their homes to treat them to a vacuum extraction.

Absolutely marvellous. Weird feeling and it actually took two visits to complete the affected ear and no extra charge. He also filmed the ear canal after treatment so I could see that everything was removed. No not the brain as I haven't got one!
Smile! It confuses people

It's the end of the Winter in the UK and I imagine that many have had colds during the up and down temperatures. I always found that after the Winter months if I had suffered a cold that I would suffer ear wax and have to have it removed. We have a specialist here that recommends that people have their ears checked for wax every 12 months. Can be a problem because it does not just effect hearing, it can also effect equilibrium etc, and can lead to a lot of pain.

Hi Major Tom

I have had issus with my ears since a kid, its a complete pain as I am 99% deaf in my left ear and only have 50% in my right ear - hence any wax has an adverse affect on my hearing. I might need to pop down to the fire station and get a heavy duty flush :) saying that me other half said they might damage my remaining brain cells

Once again, thanks to all that replied.

I hope you manage to get some relief from this problem soon.

Having recently had to cancel holiday plans because of an ear infection (althoigh not specifically a wax issue), you have my full sympathy.

Having been deaf in my left ear for yonks, I can sympathise...especially if the other ear gets blocked, as it sometimes does after a swim.

On the other hand there are great advantages.

Even in a noisy environment I have no difficulty sleeping...I just put my good ear to the pillow.

And ensuring any annoying companion at dinner, or a party, is on my left has spared me untold misery. They soon get bored when each enquiry is met by "what?"

Since I had an abscess removed from my left ear some twenty years ago, or should that be ears ago  I have continual problems with blockage, during summer when asleep and sweat gets in it, or not careful directing the shower, my perfect solution to this, although not advisable, is a good quality cotton bud, the smaller ones, dipped into TCP and go on a careful mining expedition. Gets it all out. I now have a grape sized ball of the stuff if anyone wants it for a candle. :D

I saw Dr Shady earlier today, what a nice guy!

Turns out I have fluid in my middle ear, although my other half insists some braincells came loose after she gave my a whack with a frying pan a few weeks ago for making a comment (man moment) :D

Anyway, once again thanks everyone.

Here is a bit of advice for those with blocked noses though, with your tongue press hard against the roof of your mouth, whilst doing so tap the bridge of your nose 12 times and your blocked nose will clear. If you have a blocked ear, get you partner to blow hard into the right ear. Be careful not to be in the way of breakables......

Nooooo!!! Bad advice!

Didn't your mother ever tell you the only thing you're allowed to put into your ear is your elbow? Any E&E doctor would agree with her.

I'll bet some of you are trying to put your elbow in your ear right now!

Hee hee...I've used that expression alot recently, not least with my boss who has also been recommending the cotton bud and TCP method of ear cleaning.

Dr, thank God I have never called the people in Luxor fools, this subject would not have enough pages to cope with the return mail. You know yourself you cannot educate a fool, so why state that. There are plenty of other things I could call people but for the sake of enraging people I just keep stum.   We have a couple staying with us from Luxor at the moment, so this week we will be busy but will be enjoyable showing them around. The temps here are 32C for the foreseeable 2 weeks so not too hot and makes walking around more pleasurable than the 40-45C you are getting in Luxor.

I only really lost an heavy amount of cash getting involved with another European there, but that is past and was covered anyway, We are getting on with our lives and presume the other person is getting on with their life and new grandson. I don't like harping on about the subject and it only comes to mind when the subject is brought up on here.

Now we just enjoy our life in the sun, full of entertainment and relaxation when we want to. We both have vehicles now which gives us a bit of independence to what we want to do. I had as you know motorbikes in Luxor, I would never have wasted my money on cars that look a mess after 6 months with scratches and dents all over them, and we were not allowed to place RSJ's on the back and front. My wife's Honda 12 years old 86,000KM on the clock, one owner and immaculate, not a scratch or dent in it.

We still like to hear what goes on in Luxor, because of the fact we once lived there, but would never step foot in the place again, because that period in our life is over and closed. But it's always nice for a laugh first thing in the morning, reading about the visa laws in place etc (That adds a few hundred pounds to living there every second visa) but suppose when the place is so poor they need every penny they can get. To me its stupid and would put anyone off the place that would like to live there or invest in a business. I am sure those that have left and now settled in other Countries, are well chuffed with their move, and many of them would be like us and just say "Well that's another chapter closed" some may also think Thank God!! has they get back to civilization. Strangely enough we now know of a couple of Egyptians living here, never been out of Egypt, who openly tells people its like escaping jail and living again. They are both now residents and he was a Lawyer, but across here he cannot practice for his qualifications are not to the standard required, so he runs a small restaurant now, serving North African foods, it has 16 covers.
