Visiting Luxor on my own

Post by shebs1964 » Sun Jun 10, 2012 7:18 pm

I will be visiting Luxor on my own this November, Husband can not come due to family illness. Been checking forum for all information on women on their own. Will probally be staying at the Sofitel Karnak and do not want to feel like a prisoner in the hotel of an evening. Been checking a few place out on the internet, i.e. JJ,s Bar, Genesis, The Kings head, I do like a boogie and no issue on dancing on my owm, but obviously do not want unwanted attention, does a polite but firm no normally dissude this.

I visited Luxor last November, and my husband was unable to come, like yourself. I certainly did not feel like a prisoner in the hotel in the evenings! I have been to Luxor a number of times, and did know where places were. This meant when I went out, I walked positively to my destination, and I really did get little attention.

I stayed at the El Luxor hotel which is very central to getting places. One day I did go for a walk along the new Corniche, and I did sit to take in the scenery and view - I did get approached by a gentleman?
wanting to know if I was looking for a husband! I firmly told him no!

I know a couple of the caleche drivers out there who I used when going out to eat in the evening. They took me to my destination, and back again, no hassle.

Just acting confidently, dressing respectfully, and walking with a purpose meant I attracted very little attention.

Good luck with your holiday, do not worry you will be fine.

I think you will have no problem in Genesis or JJ's. However, I wouldn't recommend the Kings Head, as I've heard that it has the reputation of a pick-up place.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

Ive been to JJ's a couple of tiimes on my own and felt perfectly comfortable. Sit at the bar and Axel and Julie will chat to, and keep an eye on you, although I doubt you'd need it. People might chat TO you, as opposed to chatting you up. Its a safe friendly place for a woman alone.

PS Forget all about being "Polite" when saying No to Egyptian men.

Thanks Hatsu, will be going to JJ's, I am by nature a polite person, always mind my p's and q's, find it difficult to ignore people when they talk to me. Though if saying polite no,s does not work can become very assertive as bad manner really annoy me.

Another suggestion...The Regal!
Definitely NOT a "pick-up joint".

JJ's close Tuesday & Wednesday evenings at the moment so don't go those nights! Live music some nights, check their website.
Regal does quizzes, I think they are on a Friday.

Jewel of the Nile has good English/Egyptian food, nice English lady and Egyptian husband/chef as owners. Used to do trivia nights for ACE, but don't know if they still do. Singles welcome and no Egyptian men to bother you. Apparently they also have a coffee shop/garden now as well, but not sure where.

It is a long time since I have been so cant give you much by way of advice on where is good to go etc - but I did routinely go on my own.

Key to my survival was a trusted driver - am sure someone on here can make a recommendation of someone they know and trust or if you want message me and I will tell you who I used to use - that is of course unless you already know someone.

Being on your own you will probably find yourself adopted by some other guests and you may well end up being the local expert since you've been before!

Dancing on your own at one of the hotel discos - a polite no might not cut it - but am sure the security will put a stop to anything that evidently becomes nuisance behaviour.

The bars / pubs - Genesis used to be quite nice - not sure if Gamal still runs it - their food used to be very good and much like Hatusu describes JJ's - you will probably find yourself again 'adopted" and its more of a join in atmosphere. The Kings - I did used to go and it is a nice enough bar - but I would go with Stan's advice - not a place for a woman on her own who does not want to attract attention.

A lot of people on here talk about Sinbads - not been but seems to be popular with the ex-pat crowd. Am sure someone on here by that time will be happy to hook up with you for dinner...

If you happen to pick up a conga line while walking around the town and it gets too much for the nerves- head for the nearest hotel - most used to check ID's for Egyptians so they wont bother following you in or loiter outside waiting for you- where they will do in a bar or smaller coffee shop.

Am sure you will enjoy it

Sx

Thanks sx some good advice and if anyone can give advice on Sinbads would be much appreciated. Just picked myself of the floor after rolling about with laughter at the thought of doing the conga down the cornich :D:D

Gd47, the regal sounds great, how easy would it be to join in with a quiz team if I just turned up, I am sure I would be a benefit to any team with my vast knowledge about nothing in particular ;-)

About eight month ago now, l wrote up on here about a wonderful place in the centre of Luxor.I called the article ' the best kept secret in Luxor', as l believe November and February are perhaps the best times to see this 'event'.

I just remembered about being in the King's Head once with my husband (Egyptian) about 3 years into our marriage. When he went to the toilet, the lady owner came over to check I wasn't being bothered by him, though she said she knew he wasn't one of the usual "mosquitos". Very kind of her.

I am not certain, but l do not think that a women has ever worked there, let alone owned it. However this may have been in a short period when the owner,Gormez died, and just before his son, the owner, took over and who still runs the place to this day.

If you think its bad in there now, God only knows what you would have thought 20 years ago..... little more than a knocking shop. However, as Gormez once pointed out to me that at least his bar did not have rooms that were offered on an hourly basis, which a few at that time did.

Sindbad's is a place I would recommend. I go there quite often - well, almost whenever I cross the river - and I often see single women happily sitting there. The waiters are friendly, and I'm certain would help if there were to be any serious hassle. The only warning I'd give is that if the owner hasn't seen you before, he will almost certainly try to get you into his shop! But he does do that in a very charming way, I've been told. As for trustworthy taxi drivers, the two regular drivers outside Sindbad's - Abdul and Maradona are both excellent.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!
