Oops! I was confusing the KH with Pub2000. :? Sinbads is perfectly fine for single women; I have never had trouble there on my own, even before my marriage.

Read the topic you mentioned a-four , you make it sound truly wounderfull. Stan and winged isis will put Sinbads on my list of places to visit, and for the names of the taxi drivers. Thank you everybody I dont think I will be board of an evening, may not have time to fit everything in in 1 week, oh well will just have to come back again :D

Sinbads is behind Luxor temple - if you find Mcdonals keep that on your left and head away from town - cross a side street - the first watering hole is Hamese and the 2nd one is Sinbads

Can someone remind me, is it Hamees or Sinbads which is known as 'The Kennel Club', or is it both of them? I really think that shebs1964 needs to know what sort of place you're all recommending to her!

Gd47, the regal sounds great, how easy would it be to join in with a quiz team if I just turned up, I am sure I would be a benefit to any team with my vast knowledge about nothing in particular ;-)
No problem whatsoever!
8.30pm every Friday and it consists of a twenty question picture round (slideshow on the two 50" plasma screens) and 6 rounds of 10 questions on various subjects...prize for the winning team is a bottle of "fine" (?) Egyptian wine! Oh, and it's free to take part...unlike a lot of UK quizzes at the moment!

OK I admit to being 'green' - but my imagination just can't work out why Sinbads might be called 'The Kennel Club'? Please enlighten me! Tried to work it out, but I am floundering!

Now Now children, a non member of the Kennel Club should be careful what he or she writes here, as Big Dolly and Long Tall Sally have a fantastic memory of most ex-pats who scutter the streets of shame known as,.........Luxor.

I've never darkened their doors, so I'm not quite sure. Perhaps it relates to someone's idea of some of the clientèle, I don't even know if it's a name first given by Egyptian locals or what.

Hamees has the reputation of being Luxor's version of Crufts!

Sindbad's is the more pleasant of the two.

And Shebs, if you want advice on visiting the West Bank, let us know.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

Hi Shebs, I visited Luxor on my own in December 2012 and experienced no problems at all. As others have said, it's important to walk confidently and purposefully; I found a brisk "La shukran" deterred most potential hasslers, any that persisted got a mouthful of Turkish which worked a treat! I always decide where I'm going before leaving my hotel, rather than having a wander until I see somewhere that looks good - I did lots of research before my holiday and had a list of restaurants, bars etc and maps with their locations.

I took the usual sensible precautions - didn't wear gold jewellry (left it at home in fact), kept a small bag across my body under my jacket in the evening, didn't carry much money, cards etc, and had a photocopy of my passport with me rather than the real thing which was safely locked away. I had a stroll along the Corniche without any real hassle, although when I stopped to take photos a guy did approach me in hopes! I just roared with laughter, and he took it in good part!

I organised a private car for all my visits through Petra Travel - the driver was great, no chit-chat, no visits to his brothers shop etc etc. The price was extremely reasonable, they were totally reliable and I got the exact itinerary that I wanted; I will certainly be using them again on my next visit later this year.

I've travelled all over the world on my own and found Luxor to be no better and no worse than many other places, even though it had changed almost beyond recognition from my previous visit in December 1999. Just be careful - like you would in any city as a woman alone! Enjoy!!!

I have to laugh here as to what is written by Yildez, who as only a visitor to Luxor, has taken it upon herself to write just a few words of advice, and yet in such a small space has written the best information, that most people who live there could not, even if they wrote a whole essay on the subject.

I actually know several ex-pats there, (one who writes on here) who would not even dream of going to the local shops unless they have their passport on them, but then, many of them have not really travelled. Oh yes most of them have been to Skegness, I grant you, but only on day trips. :wi :wi .

Thanks Yildez, will sort out photo copies of passport and have already made a list of restaurants and bars to visit. Have got names of taxi drivers who are known to people who have stayed at the hotel I will be staying at.

"I visited Luxor on my own in December 2012" I always forget the year but I normally go back over, I'm sure its still 1999, well thats the year I use when discussing my age.

If you have a good colour scanner copy the passport and then reduce it to credit card size and have it laminated - a) it looks more official,b) lasts longer and c) easier to put in a wallet/purse.
