Why would you want to take a sleeper train when its cheaper, quicker and more reliable to fly there are about 8 flights a day and takes one hour?

Like me, you must be a sucker for train travel, that obvious, you,ve got Seat 61, which most on here will not know what that means. For Europe its bang on, and can save you a fortune. However for the Middle-East its a little out of date. The journey by Wagon-lits sleeper these's day are less than romantic than they were years ago,........and are still stricktly based on the $ price.

In recent years Egyptair, has reduced its prices for internal flights dramatically, and as our expert on here, Bombay suggests, this may be the best and safest way to do this journey.

 Hmm a bit patronising there A-Four! I'm no sucker for train travel, indeed I rarely use them, but I have known about 'The man in Seat 61' for many years. I'm sure many other members here will know about Seat 61 too.

For those that don't, this is what is being referred to:

I rode 1st class from Luxor to Cairo, 2nd class on the way back, a couple of years ago (pre-revolution.

I have no regrets - it was a much better experience than flying (except for the toilets on the 2nd class train.

I went to Giza, and arranged transport from there. The Metro in Cairo is good,

Brian

Don't think I would get much sleep on the train, always in my mind would be "Is it likely to derail" the system is not getting much maintenance at the moment I think!

The last time we took the train we went Luxor to Cairo as we were spending our last day there before flying back from Cairo to Larnaca.

However, on other occasions we've taken the overnight seated train and disembarked at Giza but always taken the return back to Luxor from Cairo.

With the Abela sleeper, I would have thought it would start back from Cairo and that's probably your safest bet.

This from our journey in 2007 getting ready to disembark at Cairo:

Ramses Station has been under renovation for some years, that is why the trains have had to leave from Giza. I do not know if this is still the case. I have used Egyptair the last five years or so, and that has been a relief.
