Duty Free

Post by Zooropa »

Im sure ive read somewhere that if you travel to Luxor via Cairo that if you buy duty free booze at Heathrow it gets taken off you at Luxor.

Is this right or have i got it wrong?

All I know is that if you buy dutyfree at Heathrow, they ask you for your boarding passes (which you will have 2 of) and tell you that you will not be able to take the booze on the connecting flight, due to the 100ml rule. I don't get any duty free unless I am on London-luxor direct flight. If I am on Cairo lay over I wait til I get to Luxor dutyfree.I am not that bothered by drink, and I have seen passengers being lightened of their stash at the domestic security check points, so rather than risk this I wait til I arrive.
As I said this is just something I have found out by being on the connecting Cairo flights for a couple of years. But DO ask at Heathrow to make sure, rather than waste your money.

(Not long til you depart....are you all excited and counting your sleeps til take off??? I think you will be gone when I land on the 20th? , so even if you get some dutyfree goodies I wll not be there to share a dram or two, or meet you in the flesh. Next time, InSha'Allah!

Hi, im not that bothered by drink either but i rather fancied a bottle of Malibu this time, i wount risk it but the Luxor duty free shop near the exit is rubbish in my opinion - and very unlikely to have Malibu - never mind.

Yes im counting the sleeps - 13!

Yes i will be home by the 20th - fly back 18th!

I plan to return around October though!

All being well....

Check out your local supermarket for prices - it could well be cheaper than Heathrow Duty Free anyway. If so buy one and pack it in your case then there is no problem.
At the moment Malibu is part of a 2 for £20 offer or £14.99 each at Heathrow.

Edit: That was price per Litre bottle.

Yep always have me "Vaporizor" on me. Never know where the next ciggie break will be or when!
The first time I travelled with it, when they were a novelty, I actually sought out the manager in the departure security lanes. I asked him what the airports standing rules were on these E.Cigs. He assured me as long as I showed the E.Cig at security, and put any bottles of refill juice into my 100ml bag, I was good to go. At that time, he even said as long as I was discreet, that if I was to find a quiet seating area, I could still have a puff, but that other passengers that were not aware of the nature of this device might be upset. As I said, that was now a few years ago at the launch of these E.Cigs, and I do not puff them in airport now, as I know from comments, complaints from other people that most non smokers consider them to be the same as setting a naked flame to tobacco, so I do not set out to upset, I just go outside to the smoking area before going into departures.
This time, I will make sure battery is topped up and good to go, in case they ask for battery operated items to be powered up, cover all bases!

Yes Hepzibah is right, supermarkets have some good summer deals on at moment. I bought in a bottle of Pimms last time for my "Ladies early evening sunset tipples and nibbles!"
Ther is newcomer to the Pimms summer range this year..Pimms with berries and Ellderflower, yum, I am not much of a drinker, but it sounds like sunshine in a glass with loads of cucumber, mint, and strawberries, tinkling ice cubes, yep sounds like a plan!

If you are bringing anything via Cairo buy it in the UK and pack in your luggage if its for you you can even re bottle into plastic bottles. I think they will not let you take it on the flight from CAI-LXR. Last time I was in the Duty Free shop there was a very poor selection and it was expensive and that was before the recent tax increases which although "Duty Free" it will still affect the price. If you drink Vodka the local ID is quite good and not to expensive.

I always bring one liter malt in a sealed bag from Copenhagen Airport via Cairo. I think it was here once that I read that only one bottle is allowed. If they tell me to open my suitcases, they always ask if I have alcohol.

When I used to fly with Swiss to Cairo, go through custom and check my bags in at Domestic, the man at the scanner always called me to come closer because I had whiskey. Each time, he discretely told me to show him the bottle and looked at me as if he was hoping to intimidate me into a bribe, but he just wanted a closer look at the good stuff - and the whiskey as well.

I believe that I have seen Malibu at Luxor Airport, but you never know what they have from time to time.

;)) Let me try an A-four, I always wanted to do that: Some of you may recall that once on here, I wrote up a piece on how I turned the coconut powder from Ramadan and some rum into Malibu. :P2

I have brought bottles through from Manchester, where they told me as long as I kept the bag sealed and the receipt on show it was fine. The various security checks all tried to confiscate it, or demand a backhander to let it through. I arrived in Luxor with it still sealed and no worse off financially. I can do a hard stare just as well as they can :D
