As far as I know the four weeks will be covered on the holiday visa, but no longer.

You have been enough times JHB to know the answer to that question.

Two week's grace is allowed beyond the month of the tourist visa before you need apply for an extension so, in practice, you have 6 weeks.

But you will be charged from the expiry date if renewing. Anything past this you will be fined.

This is incorrect.

On renewing within the 2 week grace period you will not be fined. Your extension will, however, date from the expiry of the initial month.

If you leave during the 2 week period, then (and I can only speak for Hurghada airport) no fine is exacted and you are allowed to leave without any intervention. I have done so several times and I know of no instance to the contrary.

A year or so ago a lady acquaintance of mine went to catch her flight from Hurghada having stayed 3 months on the normal tourist visa. She was refused permission to fly and told to get her extension & pay a fine....at the passport office....the next day. An expensive matter...not the fine, but the extra flight ticket!!

Subsequently, I've heard of people who've been here over the "4 weeks + 2" period either getting through without query, or being fined 'on the spot" and thus able to catch their flight.

Moral? Lucky if you get away with it. Silly to even try. :cg

Its not that you cannot leave because you have no visa you need one to get in its you need to go get the new visa you should have had and pay any fine incurred.
I think you would have the same problem in the UK definitely in the USA a friend of mine had big problems there.
Different topic but I also know of people being denied travel on charter flights who have been in the country longer than the allowed period which I think is 3 months.

On my last visit which was for just over 6 weeks I extended my visa - got to the airport and without even looking for the 1 year visa just stamped the now out of date visa without any comment. Typical!! But I bet if I hadn't had extended my visa I would have been caught.

If I were JHB1, all this conflicting information I would get my visa on entry then go up to the passport office befoe my two weeks were up and enquire there.
