Wages in Egypt/Luxor.

Post by Scottishtourist »

An erstwhile "friend"once asked me for 3000le.
I won't go into details as to his reasons..but suffice to say that he was told in no uncertain terms to "**** ***."

"Oh..it's NOTHING to you"he added!

Well sorry,it's a big deal to me!!

As a waiter on cruise ship,he told me that his salary was roughly 500le per month.
So,by my reckoning he was asking for equivalent of 6 months wages. In UK,for me,that would roughly equate to about £10,500!!!

And he would pay it back to me!!
No chance!!I declined!!

How do you get to know the true cost of living in Egypt?
Was I being unfair?

Or was I being sensible?
What are the salaries?

Your salary would put you very comfortably in the top 1% of wage earners.

And that is meagre salary GD!
Mortgage, utilities, cost of living, food, travel to work,etc...all eats into that salary!

Have I got spare 3000le to pass on to Egyptian "friend?"

Am afraid the answer is NO!

Well, living on 500LE here per month is probably a lot harder than living on what you have in Scotland, even though I understand money is tight for you. Not to mention you probably have a lot more job security than a waiter in a tourist resort does.

For example, 500LE would buy you 10 kilos of meat of middling quality in Egypt. How much of your salary would that amount of meat take in the UK?

I get enough to get by with GD.
Don't eat meat too often. My mortgage will be paid off in a few years.

Can't claim pension then..cos they're upping the sticks in every direction!

But..how much can 500le buy a waiter in Egypt/Luxor?

Does he really need to send money home to his family?

Or is it fact that he is living outwith household,in El Gouna for example..and thus nullifying the income for the family?

They don't have to "keep"him nor feed him?

This always puzzles me.
Does an Egyptian family seek the income from a member earning elsewhere?
Or do they "count their blessings"that the member is elsewhere..and therefore won't be a drain on their resources?

No, but in most cases here, he has to ''keep them'' and feed the family.

Why give money away? You have had to work for it! I lent some money to a local with the promise of getting it back at the end of the month, not a lot i have to say, but 10 months later and with Police help I got it back. Like you if people want money I tell them the same.

Dont forget locals get goods a lot cheaper than we do, for example the same place wanted to charge me 40 le for bottled gas, the next day a local purchased from the same shop at 15le, over 50% cheaper, and so on and so on!!!!!

Why do people whine about being asked for a loan that they either don't want to give or can't afford?

The ball is, after all in their court. Sometimes less is more.

"Will you lend me 200 $£LE?"

"No."

The enquirer will move on with few if any hard feelings.

However, If you want to really help someone, then give what you can afford without thought of the recipient being grateful and indebted, but just because it's the right thing to do. 8)

And :ni:

Are you pleased that they are getting a good deal?

Do you think you will now reduce their rate?

May one ask how many cleaners you have? 8)

Oh well sack the buggers, do without your bottled gas. Would you do your cleaning for the same money you are paying them? How many of those sooooo rich Egyptians who are riding round in new cars and building all the time can afford to employ a cleaner?

I think he was wrong to ask and to make assumptions about your financial situation and to assume that you pay for your trips to Egypt maybe they are a gift.

But, look at it from his point of view, what he knows for certain.

You have travelled for thousands of miles for rest and relaxation on your holiday. He doesn't even get a holiday and would probably work on his day off if he could make a few extra pounds. Ergo you must be wealthy to have the free time to enjoy yourself.

After travelling the thousands of miles, you are not back packing or staying in a seedy hotel, but have paid for a cruise on the Nile. So obviously you had cheaper choices available, but felt that you could afford to indulge yourself with more salubrious surroundings.

As he is at your service during your stay, he is fundamentally in your employ. Most employers are richer than their employees.

As an employee it behoves him to be deferential to you - his mistake in both asking you and saying you could afford it.

As his employer it behoves you to treat him with respect (also as a human being.)

To quote you "he was told in no uncertain terms to "**** off." does not display respect.

Not surprising then that you playing the hard up and hard done by card was resented.

And yes, I did get out of bed on the wrong side.

MT don't sack your cleaner(s) - just reduce their pay by half and employ double the number - that way you are sharing your money around more of the locals.

There is an English man here that was paying a cleaner 40Le per day, seven days a week for two hours for the few weeks a year that he is here. They received a very professional job with zero worry about honesty. Then, while talking to some one, they suddenly reduced it to 25Le per day as he had been told that 40Le was too much. This gives the person that needs this money 19Le because their transport costs from home to here is six Le. This man is a millionaire in the UK. He referred to the cleaner as his ''little black slave.'' And they say all the s*** is in the sewer system over here. There is quite a lot transported over from the UK.

About 10 years or so ago when I gave my excellent hard working cleaner 10 LE for 4 hours work, several Egyptians told me I was mad, that 5LE a daywas more than enough.

My reply "If the person I employ is poor, it's because I keep him poor".
