Visiting Luxor

Post by jmshunter »

Hi there,
This is my first visit to the Forum although I have been coming to Luxor now every year for the past 7 years and would never think of going anywhere else as I fell in love with the place on my first visit. I have noticed the quite considerable drop in tourist numbers over the past few years and have noticed more and more local businesses and restaurants closing on every return trip. The quiet nature of the big hotels these days means it can be very difficult for the lone traveler to have a conversation of an evening and I have to confess that although I enjoy my own company most of the time I can also become very fed up with myself too. I will be returning to Luxor for two weeks mid May and was wondering if any of the ex pats in the group could enlighten me to the best places to visit out with the confines of the hotels to have a drink and a blether.
Thanks 8)

Hello jmshunter.
Me and big sis are also frequent visitors to Luxor. We are arriving 13May and spending two weeks in Sheraton.

We enjoy the solitude, the sunshine, etc. We have no desire to trample about temples, tombs, etc in the searing heat of the midday sun.
We discovered nice place last time we visited."The Agricultural Club."
Good food,nice atmosphere,no hassle,etc.

So..if you happen to see two women sitting alone there..then please feel welcome to join us and introduce yourself.
Can't promise you an exciting night..but it's sometimes nice to meet new friends and socialize.

I did on one occasion meet up with our dear departed friend Stan in Sinbad's, and Shakespeare joined us.
We had a pleasant couple of hours together, and I foolishly picked up Stan's tab for his Stella consumption that afternoon. :cg

I really should have kept the receipt and sent it to Ross McWhirter..

Anyway jmshunter, That's a good place to go to relax for a starter.

Little Britain is a nice night time area, I usually enjoy pleasant and intelligent company when socialising outside the Jewel of the Nile.

Come to the West Bank. Visit Fayrouz/Blue Sky/Ramesseum Rest House. Stay somewhere like Sheherazade. Avoid the desert of the East Bank!

Hardly see anyone in Sindbads anymore, we have not been in there though for 3 years. I always worried about the hygiene.

It's difficult to see if people are in Sindbads if you haven't been there for years, strange that. :?

I remember the times when we had quiz and games night on the West Bank advertised here.
They were some good times, as Alison and I attended a few of them over the years.

The Doc' would have his film night's on a Thursday night IIRC :tk

And the Wimmin had their full moon parties..

Paradise lost.. ? :cg

At least we still have this Forum.. :up

It's only a couple of months ago that I was in Luxor, I was going to make a comment on places that would be selling booze, however in such a short time new rules have come into force. I have to admit even then of the official places, you might find only yourself propping up the bar, and most of the hotel lounges are quite expensive.

Although Scotishtourist points out a pleasant place, being the Agric Club, booze is not sold there.

If you visit the West Bank and ask any taxi for 'mad George's, and bring me some bacon I will supply you free of charge in exchange Stellas or Miesters and tell you all the best places, the Marsam Hotel is also good for beer and a chat…

Time does not move in a linear fashion as we perceive, it moves rapidly back and forth, and to some extent, side-2-side.. :cg

I have not seen myself in Luxor in the near future, but then I have been rather pre-occupied.. :tk

@ jmshunter

You will come to notice that topics may, or as is more often the case, may NOT stay within the constraints of the subject matter...

This is why I often use "LIKES" to find posts... A trick I learned from the Hansel and Gretel story. :up

West Bank is a great place, I prefer it to the East Bank, but the East is a great place to start. If you catch my drift.. :cg

Thanks all for the tips and advise. @Bullet Magnet, a forum wouldn't be a forum without the usual round the houses a few times as well. I've never been to the Agricultural Club so may give that a try. I'm not sure I'd get bacon through customs this end Mad George although I can see the attraction. The Nile Palace is where I usually base myself but like a stella on the roof top of the St Josephs at sunset. I go to Sinbads a few times each visit and have always found it pleasant. I suppose I'm going to all the right places it's just the lack of tourists everywhere at the moment which is the problem. I thought maybe I was missing some local hot spot which only the initiated know about. I use the same taxi driver every year but he seems to have gotten himself thrown in jail according to his brother :o so any reliable, fair taxi driver names would be appreciated as well. One last thought, is it just me, or are the caleche drivers becoming very aggresive and rude these days. I understand that things are quite desperate at the moment but on my last visit, for the first time ever in Luxor I was insulted and spat at for refusing a caleche ride :ni:

Thank you all for your thoughts :wi
