About 34 daily....say 240 a week.

If the planes are, on average, only carrying 150 then those figures become 40/280.

I'm not sure Bombay's figure of 181000 was meant to represent pax flying to Egypt in July 2015.

900,000 a year equates to 17000 a week....say 120 plane loads.

Still a lot bearing in mind we're only talking about Cairo /Hurghada / Sharm in reality.

Mmmmmm....

I wouldn't rest it yet. ..

There are a hell of a lot of flights from UK going to Hurghada & Sharm.

I'd be surprised however if there's 120 in ANY week...let alone on average.

Quote:4 airlines fly direct from London to Hurghada
There are 8 flights a week from London to Hurghada....
So add another 40 or so from Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham ect quite a long way off 120...

Daft I'm not, razor-sharp on maths I'm not, I even once failed to get a job with Freddy Laker regarding exchange rates.
But these figures just don't 'figure unless Bombay can 'massage the figures along the ETAuthority .
But then, I don't have an personal interest making visitations to Egypt look good, or even unbelievable!!!..

There are, I think, 7 UK flights to Hurghada on Friday alone so probably 20-30 a week. Maybe twice as many to Sharm.

Still....as you say.....hard to see how you get to 120. ...on average.

Not to worry as the tourist industry workers always state with stoiicall misplaced admiration "the tourists come back next month"

Wow! More than 5 times as many visitors went to Sharm from UK, as opposed to HRG.

Well .....there's your 120 flights :wi

Thank you for the specific numbers Bombay - I couldn't spot them when I had a quick look at that CAA site.

I haven't noticed the hotels in Hurghada moaning....they're still building them, adding extensions, like there's no tomorrow.

You couldn't find a vacant room at Eid.

Tourism on the Red Sea can't be far short of its heyday.

Luxor, sadly, is a different story.

So, they built 2 new hotels here in Luxor last week and dozens still awaiting completion, What has that got to do with reality ?
Or even the tourist industry for that matter, makes one want to weep at the stupidity...
Oh! well those 2 million Brits have to stay somewhere.
Ps: Sold all those apartments over there yet ?

Would those Calsh drivers, shop owners, taxi drivers and touts listen all those years ago ?
They all knew, they cannot plead ignorance, many shops even had signs saying No Hassle Shop, but they still hassled you regardles...The word got out around the world, and now those who hassled are paying the price, sadly they also brought down the rest of our beloved Luxor.
They cannot say they were not warned, time and time again.

The Red sea hotels may well be full, but those people do not graze outside of the hotel boundaries, and WHY Would they if they have already paid for all their reqierments. ? so the question one has to ask is.

Does Egypt really benefit from these tourists, or as usual is it just the big businesses benefitting.

Its a bit like blighty, where all the high streets in any given town are all dominated by the big boys, and your corner shop is now a Tesco Express, and those small specialist, niche market shops are rapidly dissapearing due to high rents and rates.

Sorry Luxor, you had your chance and were given MORE than ample warning. All you have left is the dedicated few, who are also finding it harder to get to Luxor, and more expensive every time.

A place for wealthy visitors, and wealthy people did not get wealthy by SPENDING and wasting money on tit tat..

Perhaps they will in December when the TRASARO (the main Russian carrier) flights stop as they went bust last Thursday and cease all operations on 15th Dec.

Egypt's foreign currency reserves fell for the third consecutive month in September, according to central bank figures, putting pressure on authorities to devalue the currency, limit non-essential imports and take urgent steps to promote investment.

Reserves dropped 9.7% to $16.3 billion from the previous month, the lowest since March, after the central bank repaid $1.25 billion in loans that matured last month, the bank said Wednesday.

"They are getting closer and closer to the critical level," said Hany Farahat, a senior economist at CI Capital in Egypt. "If reserves go below $15 billion with the current state, the pound will come under severe devaluation pressure."

Egypt has been struggling to maintain its foreign reserves since the 2011 overthrow of longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak. President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, in office since June 2014, has staked his legitimacy on stabilizing the country and reviving the economy.

Years of unrest have taken a heavy toll on Egypt's vital tourism sector and its investment climate. El-Sisi's government has launched a number of mega-projects to attract investment but they could take years to get off the ground. Meanwhile, analysts say concerns about a virtually inevitable devaluation are dampening interest.

"Everyone is expecting a devaluation, and since the expectation is there but it's not materializing, then investment will not come until after the devaluation takes place," said Amr Elalfy, global head of research at Mubasher Financial Services.

At the same time, the central bank has "social factors" to consider, he said. "Devaluing the pound will increase costs and will increase prices."

Import restrictions on consumer goods, "if the products are selected correctly without compromising local industrial and economic activity," could free up some foreign currency wasted on importing non-essentials, said Farahat.

El-Sisi hinted at such measures during a Cabinet meeting Saturday, saying the country imports "many unnecessary goods" that could be provided locally, according to a statement from the president's office.

I'd noticed the Transaero debacle.

With Russians comprising such a significant proportion of the Red Sea visitors I imagine they'll be working hard on alternative ways of getting them here.

I can see Sisi having words with his new mate Putin.

Goodness Newcastle, you must be leading a very sheltered life down there in Hurgarda, the brothels, and street ladies of the night is run by the Russians, but that is about to change, I understand the Cairo girls are about to open 'shop' there too, shall we say keeping the currency within Egypt.

Cairo, well that place is regarded as the 'red light' district of the Middle East. I have always found it strange that the very rich Islamic people see themselves as kings, and the that the laws of Islam simply do not apply to them. This is very much the case with people from Saudi Arabia, and any person who has been on Hadj will tell you the same.

If there is a form of Islam to my liking, then it would be the Turkish version, where Kamal Ataturk, forced it, kicking and screaming into the 20th century.
