In answer to your very valid question......A 2nd Opinion.
Quite normal to be honest, quiet quite really, loads of new tombs new finds, even a new beer,
supermarkets are great, great deals on at the moment and to be honest.
Certainly not to many beardy weirdies wandering the streets with a crazed look in their eyes waving AK47 's, screaming where's my virgins ?
Mind you having said that, some lady with a beard gave me a weird look the other day, so I gave here a raised left fist I'm wit you bro type salute, totally bemused her trust me I'm a Dr..
'Atmosphere asks our other excellent MD ?
Well in Cairo the atmosphere is totally sh*t and has been for years unless like me, you lived up on Mokkatam.
The atmosphere here in Upper Egypt is excellent,
I even know quite a few local ex-pat 'touchy-feally ladies who's sole job is the clean the electrics and hence the atmosphere,... 'Medically speaking ? as a Dr.
Have fun...

Yeh that just about sums up how I found it at the end of last year. It was quiet, apart from the usual hassle, but everything seemed a bit glum

What I can not understand is that we are constantly reminded on here by those who are either ex-pats or long stay tourists that there are plenty of balloons in the sky early in the mornings in Luxor.

Now, these things are not just sent up for effect, therefore there must be the tourist in Luxor to fill them. Bennu, when she is in Luxor reminds us of that fact, even Newcastle mentioned that he witnessed 12 balloons, one morning earlier this week.

I suspect the balloons are related to cruise boats being in dock. The days when the boats weren't there.....NO balloons.

Tilly my friend is visiting at the moment she's not been here for 9 months. I think she would say that things are quiet but she remarked the other day that she thought it was better than last year. She will be even happier now that Wenkies has re-opened.

Its just peaceful and quiet, ideal for relaxing. Hope you get time to see the real Egypt on the West Bank, where most of the foreigners that move to Luxor purchase property and live.

I'm curious, what about it makes it "real"?

At least 2 days last week there were no balloons - poor visibility and/or high winds meant that they were grounded by the aviation authorities. But when there are balloons up most of the users have been Egyptians over the festive season.

Where are the statistics for this?

With all these foreigners living and staying on the West Bank I would think the East Bank could well be the quiet side. :)

Don't forget that only those who spend 12 months a year in their own property in Luxor count has living there.

actually I know a lot more people who live on the east bank than the west, and they "live Here" according to MT's definition. Whether or not it is in the "real" Egypt I don't know because I fail to understand that term.
