Concert and book-signing

Post by Brian Yare »

... on 10 November 2016, Luxor Westbank

On Thursday, November 10, 2016, the newly opened shop, Sandouk, will host a concert with classical Arabic music. Taha and his musicians play for us flute, oud, violin and drum.

In the breaks Hans Mauritz reads from his recently published book "Ägypten verstehen - seine Sprache erleben", (Understanding Egypt - experience its language), copies of which will be available for purchase and signing by the author.

As the space at this new location is limited, an early registration is requested (01000934980).

Where? Sandouk, Luxor Westbank, Ramla, at the 'recovered' canal behind the Nile Valley Hotel

When? 10.11.16 from 17 to 19 in the evening

How much? 20 LE (hot drink included)

[With excuses for the translation from German]

I did not know that! This evening, I ran into the hosts and told them that everyone seemed to be going. "We're prepared!", they said.

This is from facebook:

Two cultures touch each other in Shop Sandouk

We would like to welcome you to a joyful evening at Shop Sandouk on Thursday 10 November 17:00 to 19:00 hours

Entrance fee just 20LE

There will be a complimentary drinks area where you can help yourself to Tea, Coffee & Karkade

The evening will include music performed by Mr Taha and his group of musicians, instruments will be flute, lute, violin and drum, we are sure you will greatly enjoy this fine music.

Also there will be an small presentation by Dr Hans of his very delightfully written little book which focuses on the building of the Egyptian language over a period of years. The book features many amusing little stories of daily life in Egypt and is written in German. His presentation will take place during the evenings interval period.

Alternatively during the interval you can visit the School of Art located directly across from Shop Sandouk. Mr Orabi who holds an arts workshop for children once a week will be available to answer any questions you may have, you will find some very interesting works of art in the gallery.

Actually it means "box" (e.g.the sort you'd keep trinkets in).....but is used colloquially for a skip.

Some locals have wondered why this name was chosen. It sounds like "Container Shop".
The original idea was to bring a huge blue treasure box with local crafts to the five star hotels. The woman behind it felt that a showroom would be better, and that turned into a shop, but it all began with a very big box.
