Tourist attraction.

Post by Scottishtourist » Sat Nov 12, 2016 3:34 pm

O.k,here's the thought!

Big sis is keen to visit Luxor next April/May.She's already looked at websites and wants to stay in Etab.Flight to Heathrow from Glasgow and same day direct flight to Luxor via Egyptair.

Me?I'm not really so keen, cos I know what she's like! She enjoys the hotel based holiday, eating there and never keen to leave it!

I will be left on my own for a great deal of the time, and whilst enjoying the weather and building up a suntan..I reckon I'll be bored stiff!

I've kinda been dissuaded by forum members to go for my afternoon stroll. If I sit in coffee shop alone I'll be regarded as a"whore"especially if I ain't wearing suitable attire! So bang goes any notion of just having a meander about Luxor unaccompanied.

What about a relaxing felluca sail?A caleche trip?
Would I really be "safe"enough doing these by myself?
Have any lessons been learned?
Can the "creeps"in Luxor really be trusted to take me where I want to go without ripping me off?

As a more or less single woman in Luxor(albeit with a companion who is bloody hard work!)can anyone reassure me and tell me that my wanderings will be "hassle"free..much the same as they were in Spain,Rhine Valley,Belgium, etc?

Or will it just be same old, same old?Ex-pats ignoring me..and Egyptians hassling me?

How weird!

Surely a direct flight from Glasgow to a hotel in the sun would be less hassle and a lot cheaper!

And probably a lot more to do in the hotel as well.

Why is she keen to visit Luxor ?

What is your sister's ideal holiday?
What is it that would 'cut the mustard' for you?

With Glasgow airport having direct flights to many varied destinations, surely you'd be better putting your joint hard earned cash to a holiday in a location that offers you both more of what you require as individuals and as a pair travelling. That way you would probably both go home happier and still with some cash to go towards your next holiday.

I have friends that have been coming to Luxor for the last 16 years. the last ten staying at the E-Tab when the old Hilton closed. If you take my advice you will not stay at that hotel as the standards have dropped dramatically over the last four years. Last years holiday was the worst hotel experience they have ever had to endure. They are staying elsewhere next time. Normally I would not recommend a hotel nowadays as I don't stay in them, but have witnessed this ones decline every year because of my friends month long stays there. On the up side If you and your sister do decide to stay there is that you will have bucket loads to complain about once you return home.

Ibiza! It's not all night clubs and raves, but they are there if you want them.

It's very clean, has the famous night life, (clubbing areas are restricted, there are plenty of quieter, smaller places). For those that like them there are beaches and water sports, excellent restaurants at all price levels and beautiful natural countryside.

English is spoken pretty much everywhere, Ibiza town for example, has amazing shopping at a price, as well as tat - but there are little tourist markets going on which offer lots of unusual and more affordable stuff

Well served by air, travel companies and busses/taxis it is also easy to plan your own holiday as an individual or group.

There is a very good reason why Ibiza is a popular resort for all ages and the very, very rich as well as those that aren't.

I spend about three months a year there in total at the moment, not so hot as Luxor, warmer, cheaper and easier to get to than Egypt.

Having lived there for 10 years I can thoroughly endorse MD's comments on Ibiza..

Alas...I hear it ain't cheap any more.

As a holiday yes, reasonable especially if it's an all in job - but to live there is not cheap when compared to the Spanish mainland. Property is about twice the price, but I think well worth it. I am very tempted to move there. 8)

Thought I'd bump this just in case Scottishtourist missed it. I'd still be interested in her answers to my questions.

what we have to understand, is that the international standard for ALL hotels in Luxor, from the Hilton to the Movenvick and all those in between, has now been removed. International tour companies such as Tui, Thomas Cook etc, require a set standard for insurance purposes. This, from what I understand is proving difficult to put into practice.
