Little by little there are signs of return of some tourist.

The Tourism Promotion Authority said in a statement Monday that Luxor airport received the first Japanese flight on a Boeing 338 b777 aircraft, carrying 230 passengers to visit the cities of Luxor, Aswan and Cairo.

The flight is the first Egypt Air charter from Japan on the Sir Osaka / Tokyo / Luxor line. The series of weekly charter flights is expected to run throughout the winter season until May of next year.

Tourism Authority Chairman stressed the importance of the return of Japanese tourists who are characterized by high spending rates compared to other nationalities, in addition to their marked interest in cultural and heritage tourism, which the authority seeks to develop.

This is considered the first major arrival of Japanese tourists to Luxor after a five-year absence from Egypt, due to the political unrest.

As the winter begins, the tourism sector in Egypt flourished slightly in some cities, including Hurgada, Sharm El-Sheikh, Luxor, Alexandria and Siwa Oasis.

There has been a 20 percent increase in the number of people moving through Egypt's sea ports on the Red Sea this year, according to data released by the Red Sea Ports Authority in October.

Some tourism experts forecast a promising season compared to last winter, which saw very low tourist influx.

“There are good beginnings of a recuperative tourism season, especially after the intense promotional campaigns that were launched by the government to revive tourism,” Ammary Abdel Azim, head of Tourism Companies Division at the Chamber of Commerce, told Egypt Independent.

“I expect a 5 to10 percent increase in tourism flow this winter”.

On behalf of the Egyptian government, the marketting firm J. Walter Thompson (JWT) launched a three-month tourism marketing campaign in September 2016, costing the Egyptian government more than US$20 million.

The campaign targets 12 European nations and is part of an agreement reached with the Egyptian Tourism Authority last year.

If you're pressed for time and can't do a full-face physiognomy analysis, try shouting "Where you from?"

Seen loads of them today in Luxor in the caleche convoy being ferried around, looking I might say mightily unimpressed.
Luxor has never been such a mess, roads up everywhere you turn, all for the sake of the gas pipes.

I can generally spot and identify Japanese nationals, especially women, fairly easily, but then I do have a bit of an advantage in that respect having lived and worked among them for most of my working life.

I suspect that the group that Dusak saw were not Japanese. He seems to have spotted them before they arrived! (Or I could have misread the news about them arriving in Luxor.)

As for Carrie's remark of the group she saw today looking 'mightily unimpressed', they look like that much of the time anyway, except when they are mightily excited! :)

Definitely a few Japanese about :

Luxor Governorate added 6 new photos.

Luxor sound and light region organized the first show of Japanese language after stopping for longtime .Ashraf Faheem , public relations manager of Karnak Sound and Light region , Huda Elgohary , general manager of the region , Hany eldoui , general co-ordinator of public relations and marketing and all workers organized a special celebration for the Japanese group consists of 500 tourists . The group assists sound and light show after 5 years of absence. The tourists were welcomed by the troupes of folk arts, tanoura and oboe.

I wonder in what way they were "assisting" sound and light show?

Clicking their Nikon's on & off perhaps? :tk

It's well worth joining the Japanese showing....no difficulty in seeing over the heads of the crowd

And if you haven't heard that booming commentary in Japanese....well....you haven't lived :urm:

I was just reading about the sound and light show too. Let's hope it was a good translation and that the evening was enjoyed by all.

I noticed a news post the other day saying that it was Egyptair that had re-opened the Japanese route. Japanese people on the whole tend only to travel in organised groups. It is not that normal for them to travel to foreign places without booking through specialist companies and being accompanied by an entourage of guides and agents. Independant travel is not really encouraged. I just hope that it is a sustainable route.

Wandering off track somewhat...

I read recently from an allegedly "very reliable source" that Air Cairo (Egyptair's answer to Ryanair) was to start 2 or 3 weekly flights from UK direct to Luxor - from early December!. At least that's what Luxor's tourism chief let slip......allegedly.

Needless to say....nothing showing on Air Cairo website.

I suppose if you say it enough times...somebody might believe you :urm:

Last week over two days heavily armed army Red Caps stopped the traffic outside the E-Tab while many Arab families crossed over to their coaches, six in number. Also in attendance were two armored cars. Out of curiosity anyone have info who these visitors were?

Well with a status that warrants that type of treatment I would doubt if they were staying there, probably looking to buy it?

I was later told that they had the whole hotel to themselves, which is nothing to brag about as my four friends this year had the whole place to themselves. But they probably got a proper service.
