The British are coming, the British are coming.

Post by Dusak » Sun Jan 08, 2017 10:58 am

Happened to click onto Nile TV, an English language news and current affairs program, and they highlighted that seventy British holiday makers had just landed at Luxor direct from Heathrow. The news caster seemed to know where they would be visiting, naming all the popular tourist sites. She also stated that hopefully this visit would see a relaxation of the travel restrictions/negative advice from other European countries and lead to a positive increase in visitor numbers. Wishful thinking me thinks, especially when they miss state ''the restrictive travel'' announcements. And I very much doubt that a plane carrying just seventy to Luxor would be cost effective for the airline.

That sounds like an archive article.
I'm nit sure how many people were on my direct flight just before Christmas -prime British travelling time - but it was not a particularly big plane. Only 2 people in the Business Class and the rest, possibly about 100 seats, not quite full. Most seemed like British holidaymakers, but others were Egyptians returning home with families for visits.

The "non-stop" flight is Monday only. So far as I know there are no other "direct" flights, meaning ones where no change of plane is involved.

One thing I did notice about arriving on that flight... we were not greeted with by a Welcoming Party with Fanfare and Favours. So many of the news type articles that talk about flights arriving from country xyz show pictures of the travellers being greeted warmly by various groups or persons. The flight from the LHR on 19th December definitely arrived to Luxor Airport normality. :)

They probably though the lone pharaonically-dressed greeter for the inaugural flight in Oct 2016 was sufficient.

Luxor International Airport has received on Monday 24/10/2016 direct charter flight No. 762 from London carrying 105 tourists.

According to Public Relations Director at Luxor International Airport Bekhit Khairi, they will visit tourist and archaeological sites in the city and Aswan.

He pointed out the plane takes off at 11:00 am from Luxor international airport and it will return back at 12:30 on Monday every week.

MS762 is the regular non-stop Monday flight from LHR. Not a charter. The departure and arrival times are a nonsense, and if the photograph was of the arrival of this flight it should have been in the middle of the night.

I've not heard of this "State Information Service" before. There are probably other untruths on its site.

On 28th December 2016 they were claiming:

"The cultural tourism contributed to the increase of occupancy rate in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan where occupancy hit 50 percent, Turgoman noted, adding that coastal tourism has been achieving lower progress rate. "

Did anybody see 50% occupancy here over Christmas?

Yes, but only from the very limited perspective of my hotel. I was told by one of the regular guests that the Lotus Hotel was fully booked over Christmas and New Year. Certainly, if breakfast was anything to go by, there was full or near full capacity over Christmas. I left on the 30th so can't comment about New Year.

Well.....they do call themselves "STATE Information Service".

What do you expect.....accuracy? The truth?? :urm:

The Telegraph gave a somewhat more accurate picture.

The first flight took off from Heathrow at 5pm on Monday evening, arriving in Luxor at 23.20pm local time, and will operate once a week, with the return leg leaving Luxor at 10am on Monday mornings. While there are numerous one-stop options for Britons heading to the Egyptian city, the direct route will let fliers avoid a wait of at least two hours at Cairo.

At present, there is one direct flight a week to and from London Heathrow and Luxor. It runs on Mondays.
