Electronics banned on some US flights from Middle East

Post by Bombay »

The US has announced a ban on electronic devices from cabin baggage on flights from eight mainly Middle Eastern and North African countries.
Officials said extremists were planning to bring down passenger jets with bombs hidden in laptops, tablets cameras, DVD players and electronic games.
The measure will affect nine airlines operating out of 10 airports.
Large electronic devices will only be allowed on board in checked baggage. Phones are exempt from the new rules.
US officials said the airlines had been given 96 hours, beginning at 07:00 GMT on Tuesday, to ban devices bigger than a mobile phone or smartphone from cabins. They said the ban had no end date.
The airports affected are:
Queen Alia International, Amman, Jordan
Cairo International Airport, Egypt
Ataturk Airport, Istanbul, Turkey
King Abdulaziz International, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
King Khalid International, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Kuwait International Airport
Mohammed V International, Casablanca, Morocco
Hamad International, Doha, Qatar
Dubai International, United Arab Emirates
Abu Dhabi International, United Arab Emirates
The nine airlines are:
Royal Jordanian
Egypt Air
Turkish Airlines
Saudi Arabian Airlines
Kuwait Airways
Royal Air Maroc
Qatar Airways
Emirates
Etihad Airways

As I have no intention of flying to US....I don't give a sh*t 8)

On the other hand , there's talk of UK following suit which may give me a problem.

I'm off to London shortly with, as usual, only hand luggage...and I need my tablet (not necessarily in cabin).

Sounds as if I might have to pay 35 quid, or whatever, to put the bloody thing in the hold :dv

Fingers crossed that any UK ban, like the US, will be airline and airport specific....and NOT apply to easyJet from Hurghada!

It would seem that the UK has just put the ban in place.

Downing Street said the restriction would apply to inbound direct flights from Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.

It's specific for the US as there are less direct flights usually Capital cities except Saudi.

UK airlines operating direct flights which will be hit by the new measures are British Airways, easyJet, Jet2.com, Monarch, Thomas Cook and Thomson.

Overseas airlines will also be hit, with Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airways, Atlas-Global Airlines, Middle East Airlines, EgyptAir, Royal Jordanian, Tunis Air and Saudia all facing the same ban.

Affected airlines were informed immediately, but may take a few days to implement the new security measure, said Number 10.

From the UK Gov travel warning:
Latest update: Summary – there’s a heightened risk of terrorist attack against aviation; the UK government has decided to implement additional security measures for flights departing to the UK from a number of countries including Egypt in the coming days but no later than 25 March; you should co-operate fully with security officials; if you need more information about how this may affect your flight, contact your airline or travel company

There's no way I'd trust putting a device in my suitcase. The chances of damage or theft are too high.

I would be worried if it is known that most hold luggage may contain laptops.

Interesting! If you look at the map on the BBC link it is showing the same countries for the ban as decreed by the USA and UK however, Tunisia is UK only and Morocco is USA only.

I can see claims for stolen/mishandled baggage going through the roof.

Ban is in place on Gov UK site from at the latest 25th March. Info here:-

https://www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restric ... ical-items

Warning is included that valuable items in the hold are generally excluded by insurance. We have packed ready for Monday, 4 cases @22.5kg now have to redo the whole b****y lot to get the laptops in. A 5 hour flight with no kindles is going to be fun too isn't it! :xx

Have emailed for clarification as some reports include scanner & cameras in the ban.

Interesting that the affected countries doesn't include Somalia which is where the laptop bomber flew from last year! Not saying they are copying the US of course just because Somalia is on their banned list.

It's curious that other countries, particularly Russia and those in Europe, have not moved - yet - to implement similar bans.

Looks like there is some specific information that the authorities have, no use complaining about the ban and after all I would rather be safe.

I am all for improved safety measures, as long as that is what this is all about.

I don't really understand the difference between packing theses items in hand baggage or hold baggage as it is all going on a plane. I can only assume that there are more intricate scanners behind the scenes that hold baggage goes through, but I have no idea.

For convenience, let's hope this is a temporary thing.

On the news last night they gave specific measurements but I wasn't quick enough to write them down. They did also keep refering to 'size of a mobile phone'. I have seen some camera's that small but not many.

What's the betting the price of having your bags cling wrapped goes up. I certainly think that is going to be more popular now.
