Imagine if they tried to implement this on European flights and how much western business's would be affected by not being able to take their laptops...... just saying.... :ct

I wonder how many Europeans planning holidays on the back of this new restriction are just going to say "Sod it, I'm going to Benidorm this year"...

I found the following article quite informative re the current situation...and particularly the risk to your laptop etc and what you might do to mitigate it :

The United States and United Kingdom have announced that laptops, e-readers and almost any other electronic device that is not a phone will be banned from cabin luggage on some flights.
The US rule only applies to 10 airports, but one of those is the world's busiest international airport - Dubai International.
The UK ban does not include Dubai, and only has six countries on the list.

Which items are affected?.....etc.....etc....

My apologies Zooropa, but sometimes a trolling A***hole manages to get through and make an obnoxious post. I have also deleted your own response to them so as not confuse the thread as your reply would be out of context, I trust you will understand the situation. :up
In addition I have also banned the member on a permanent basis, that sort of post will not be tolerated

True, I'd forgotten that.

I don't bother reading on flights as you are interrupted so many times, one way or another, and I can read at home anytime. I prefer to use the time to watch movies that I've never seen as I don't always have the chance to before they leave the cinemas.

According to the news, the terror group IS have been looking very closely at creating explosive devices within such technology according to the intelligence gathering sectors. Hens the ban. But all they need do, in my opinion, is plant such a device, when created, in a country that is not covered by these new regulations. For it to stand any chance of such a rule working, it needs to be worldwide.
Life is your's to do with as you wish- do not let other's try to control it for you. Count Dusak- 1345.

Dusak, I share your thoughts. I've been trying to understand the specifics of the present new rules and it does not make sense to me. Equally, I don't see how it is going to be easy to operate at airports. I think that it is likely to become an overall ruling before long, not really because of airline security but because of airport operational efficiency.

in this day and age if these things are not spotted going through security it does not say much about airport security. Better checking them at the gate than not checking in the unchecked hold luggage. Quote from an Aviation security expert.

Or they might decide it was a silly, impracticable over-reaction, applied with no logic or consistency....and drop the idea ;)

Of course they won't. Far easier to leave a spurious "protection" on the books than admit it was a mistake

Entirely agree :up

Isn't that why laptops etc, are sometimes swabbed for explosives?

Better to check thoroughly items potentially harbouring explosives than just chuck them in the hold.

We live in hope that common sense will prevail. It is probably our biggest took in the security battle.

Unchecked hold luggage?? that smacks of US internal flights not international flights. According to an article I read earlier the hold luggage is scanned with higher performance X ray equipment and explosive sniffing systems...dogs included. There was some concern expressed over the carriage of Lithium ion batteries in unpressurised holds which was why we were all required to place such objects in cabin baggage from a couple of years ago. Security trumps safety it seems :o

I originally wrote something else which was an example of daft English "unchecked checked luggage"!

However what I mean is unchecked in the checked luggage (even better] any way the electrical goods can be examined going through security to the gate as opposed to being packed in hold luggage.

Don't know how many places have security scanners etc before check in.
