I dont know, I am not them, but I "guess" if you see wires from one device to another, they put 2 and 2 together and got 5 !

Set off the device by activating the ipod? - seems logical.

Indeed, headphone sockets produce a small amount of power, they have to thats how speakers work...

What were the headphones for? - so he could hear more clearly whether the bomb had gone off?

Subterfuge ? I really cannot say, BUT then again, you have missed my point in displaying that picture, in todays paranoid society that tin looked very suspicious to them, that is what they are trained to pick up on is it not ? and I can see why, even if you cannot.
I think its you that is missing the point. Weve already agreed it looked suspicious but it was confirmed to be innocent upon checking and he was still slung in jail.

You should not be slung in jail on the bases of a suspicion and then held there when the facts dispel that suspicion.

Its very easy to poke fun at another persons bad decisions or mistakes. Who on here can honestly say they have not done stupid things that still embarrasses them when recollected at least once over their lifetime? If that had been me that had been held, I would of been bricking it. I consider myself as one of those folk that is not a worrier by nature, or one that is easily frightened by any event, but, when all this visa situation kicked off and I had my visa refused, had to go for an interview with the SP, told to leave for a couple of days and then experienced a glitch on the computer when I was being checked through and both the guy on the computer and his female assistant just looked at me, my heart was ticking like the proverbial $ watch. Did they learn from this terrible episode in their life? Yes, **** Egypt off in any future destination plans.

Just been reading this story...so thought I'd add my two penny worth.

Probably not a good idea to attend an airport anywhere in the world with the tin and wire assembly indicated. Initial outcome entirely predictable.

As to the 3 day runaround, according to the report this was to resolve the paperwork. A tad excessive, time wise, you'd think......but only if you've never been to Egypt

And if you are familiar with Egyptian officialdom, and their overall warmth and friendliness, the events that transpired will not surprise you in the least either :ct

I used to carry a home-made Geiger counter in my hand baggage back in the 20th century. It was a Maplin kit, and worked well.

On a Swissair flight to the USA the Stewardess wanted to know what it was, so I told her that I was interested in the amount of radiation I was being exposed to on a regular flight. Soon even the captain was interested. I don't think there was any monitoring of radiation levels for air crew. I doubt if they were even aware of the risks.

I was going to bring the Geiger counter out to Egypt to test radiation levels on some of the sites, but don't think I will risk it. I might get it out to Egypt in hold baggage, but I'd be unlikely to get it back home.

My model was slightly thinner, encased in black plastic rather than metal, and very much cheaper than the current offering. But the spec. is about the same.

I always suffer the deep seated fear of customs & excise when travelling.
it's like thinking you might be over-weight on ones allowance.

I think smuggling goes hand-in-hand with borders, it's an age old profession, not to-be ignored.
I grew up with smugglers, buccaneers & highwaymen.

I was arrested once at Theifrow returning to Blighty by armed Police.
My companion an actress and Luxor visitor quickly beat a hasty retreat.
Unpaid fine, paid by on-line credit card, we parted the best of mates... 8)

Why if it was thought to be such a dodgy piece of kit....was he allowed through Heathrow with it? Think it says more about baggage checks in England than it does in Egypt.

Bit of a stupid item to take on a plane in any event especially something with wires hanging out of it, :| but as I understand it this was the first day of the ban being implimented, so maybe it had been checked and Ok'd at the UK end when he flew out and before the battery ban came into effect.
