25th April Free Entry to Sites

Post by HEPZIBAH » Mon Apr 24, 2017 11:06 pm

Sorry, can't provide links tonight but according to the Egypt Independant publication there is free entry to the historic sites for the public tomorrow.
If interested it may be worth doing your own internet search for more information.

Free entry to museums, archaeological sites on Sinai Liberation Day.

Antiquities Minister Khaled Hanafy announced that museums and archaeological sites would open to the public for free on Tuesday, the 35th anniversary of the liberation of Sinai.

Manpower Minister Mohamed Saafan announced earlier on Monday that Tuesday April 25 would be an official occasion for both public and private sector workers.

Sinai Liberation Day is celebrated in Egypt on April 25 every year, corresponding with Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai peninsula following defeat in the 1973 War and the signing of Camp David Accords.

Slightly off-topic......
Israel's withdrawal....... following defeat in the 1973 War
Ahem!

This fiction is, no doubt, still the narrative in Egyptian history books, schools etc.

Whilst the surprise attack across the Suez Canal in the October 1973 Yom Kippur war was a strategic victory for the Egyptian forces, it is a bit of a stretch to say they won any war! They gained a few kilometres of Sinai...and recovered a lot of self-esteem.

But, had the Americans not intervened subsequently to enforce a ceasefire, the Egyptian 3rd Army was about to be surrounded and annihilated when the Israelis recovered and reacted.

Then take along some Egyptian friends. It won't cost you anything more than your time and encouragement.

Exactly, I could never figure out how losing most of your tanks could be considered winning :tk

I saw another article yesterday that was more specific in who was allowed free entry. It restricted it to Egyptians and also Arab residents. It said nothing at all about other foreigners.

The April Newsletter from the Ministry of Antiquities confirms this restriction of the offer(s).
