On my travels back and to from Hurghada a few years back, there was a new train track being laid, but suddenly ended unfinished around twenty miles outside the city.

Maybe you're thinking of the single track that runs from the (cement?) works outside Qena , alongside the northern side of the highway to Safaga. It peters out about half way to Safaga and I imagine was only ever used for carrying materials to the rest houses built in the middle of nowhere. It's a narrow gauge track and has never been in use for years to my knowledge.

It always amused me that they built a flyover over it.....when it's so insignificant they could just as easily run the road through it (as indeed it does at the Qena end).

In the distant past there was , I think, a project involving a phosphate transporting line between Qena & Safaga.....until someone stole 110Km of track  I remember reading somewhere of a goods line that existed and operated between Qena & Safaga and which was in operation in the 1930's....but was dismantled after WWII.

an interesting tidbit, but hard to see the gauge while traveling at a speed of 110mph in the taxi.
