Luxor - The Corniche

Post by crewmeal » Tue Aug 06, 2019 3:02 pm

Again on arrival in Luxor last night I was saddened to see the road next to The Corniche looking like a bomb site. It seems the whole road has been dug up for improvements. Most of the boats are now littered around the bridge area which is a pain. Not sure when the work will be completed but saw some guys with pick axes busy bashing the surface.

With the Boats 'littered around the Bridge they are not littered around the Temple spoiling
our view and our air pollution.... 8)

While I agree about the pollution from the boats, at times it was very bad and I suppose from the other side of the river they look different and spoil the view, I do have to admit to having a bit of nostalgia for seeing them all lines up along the Corniche and brightly lite up at night. They always seemed to me to add a bit of something to the experience of visiting Luxor as do most harbours when they are full of yachts or boats, those places always seem to be bustling. The big downside was all those empty boats as the tourism dried up, but those diesel fumes and engine noise were always a killer, shame they could not have been connected to a land based electricity supply.

An eyesore on the corniche, how long did it take to remove the rusting, sinking, hulk the "Emilia". At one time only the nicest looking boats were allowed to dock in front of the Winter Palace now well anything seems to go.
In my opinion the sooner all the boats are moved up to the bridge, which was supposed to be the idea, the better.
From either side of the river the view would be improved by the boats removal, less pollution from the boats pumping their waste into the river. Up near the bridge there is much stricter rules against this and fines enforced.

That is the time I am harking back too Carrie, when just the 'nicer' boats were allowed to moor up along the Corniche.

Yeh! 6 abreast all pumping out diesel fumes whilst supping a cool beer in The Met.
I even sent the Gov a proposal, whereby they sell electricity and the boats save on diesel,
and we don't all die of carbon monoxide poisoning... 8)
Ps: Anyhow having been laid up so long they will all be cockroach infested....

I didn’t realise you folk were so environmentally friendly. However you have valid points about pollution which seems everywhere on the river. In some places it’s so bad such as down here in Aswan where I’ve seen staff from various boats chucking stuff in the river.

You’re all right about diesel fumes from the boats and it’s a problem the owners need to spend money on,they won’t of course.

There is no excuse for chucking their rubbish overboard as there is a garbage collection boat that services the Nile cruisers.

Well been along the corniche today it is a bit of a disaster zone near the ferry. Apparently new electric cables are being laid and water mains improved. (Just hope they don't get the two mixed up) Apparently they have been told to get the work done as quickly as possible. We shall see.
If it takes them as long to do the work as it did along Khaled El Whaleed Street then it might be finished this time next year.

If you’re walking below the corniche right next to the tourist shops beware of men chipping away at the masonry above with their little hammers. I’ve just witnessed a chunk fall on some guy’s head. He was ok but obviously not a happy teddy.

Saw some photos of the project yesterday, not sure if they were real though, or architects prijections because it seemed the project was mostly finished. Seemed to look ok to me. Like most photos though looked quite void of people, it may be the people were not allowed in the area to keep it clean and pristine or they are not finished enough for people to access

Have all your “local contacts” deserted you?

The photos you have seen are real enough, the work on the corniche is pretty well finished...and to a standard remarkable for Egypt.

The statuary is, again, better than I have seen in Egypt in recent years.

The corniche is clean, and a credit to the town.

Whether it remains so...we’ll have to see. But that need not concern residents of Cyprus who’ve sworn never to return. :P

There are three men painting the little cross-over points on the metal railings, copper colored.
We noticed that they had only painted one side, it will be like the forth bridge.
I don't know if it's true but, they say 'the Chinese paid for it all.
Makes a change as it was Chinese that built the very first Corniche..... 8)
Ps: Both statements could well be 'urban myths...

Well.....that didn’t take long!

Apparently they’ve caught the prat who did it. I suggest they make him lick it off.

Will have to take a walk and have a look I hope they have repaired the steps down to the ferry. I was over a few days ago and it was a disaster zone so they have done really well to pull it all together.

I always manage to trip up when using those steps down to the ferry especially in the dark. I think there is a slab out of line with the others.

Well took a walk along there yesterday, looks lovely. The new flower beds with bits of grass were being watered and I hear that three men have been employed to keep them looking nice.
Well done. The seats although not offering enough shade were at least made of wood so that in the heat of the summer they are not like frying pans to sit on.
Steps down to the ferry all nice and clean although a couple of them remain damaged. All in all very impressed.

This has been the blight from the uneducated, wonder what it will look like in 12 months time, missing paving stones, graffitti, rubbish etc etc. Has much as I applaud improvements, in a place like Luxor they seem to be a waste of money!

Oh I wondered when we'd hear from you! At least the authorities are trying to do something to smarten up the place. From various photos shown it looks really good. Really MT why do you have such a 'downer' on the place??

Does it matter why? I just wonder why someone living in another country has such an obsession.
Still we have a beautiful new corniche, all new footpaths in the village here, a lot to be happy about.
