CAIRO AIRPORT

Post by Chris »

I have friends arriving next month who have a through flight from Heathrow to Luxor via Cairo. Can anyone tell what the transfer arrangements are at Cairo and if they get their Visitor Visa at Cairo Airport or Luxor Airport?

Disembark the aircraft in Cairo and head straigt for a bank which sells visas (£20 $25) and exchange currency as required. Stick the visa in the passport and proceed to the domestic departure gate and go through immigration. Go upstairs and find your departure gate for Luxor. A cigarette shop and cafes available if you have time.

I do this every year.

Thanks for the info crewmeal but just to be clear. Do you mean - proceed to the bank for the visa and then clear immigration at Terminal 3 Cairo Airport - which means one is then landside - and then go upstairs to go through security - back to airside - and then to the Departure Gate for Luxor? Or does one follow the 'Transfer' signs after disembarking the LHR flight? Sorry I am just a bit unclear on what to advise them!

It's been a few years since I arrived via Cairo but I do remember the process was quite clear and simple.
Yes, you get the Visa at Cairo.
On arrival at Luxor the staff guide you through to get your luggage.

No, no. The visa kiosks are airside, before passport/immigration control, you don’t go through passport/immigration control in Cairo, you stay airside in transit. As you leave the plane follow the signs for passport/visa. You get your visa then follow the airside signs for Domestic Terminal. If I remember rightly, you actually pass the signs on the left, on the way to the visa kiosk, and so have to double back. When you arrive in Luxor go through the main baggage hall and turn left to Domestic arrivals, where your bags will arrive. Then go through passport/immigration control and out.

No no Yildez!! These days on arrival at Luxor you go straight to the international baggage claim area through the door of the domestic arrivals. Wait for your cases and then take them to the x-ray machine at Customs. You will have cleared immigration at Cairo after obtaining your visa.

If you like head straight to the duty free shop as you won't be able to buy anything at Heathrow because you transit Cairo

You mean: turn left to International Arrivals, (then through custom).

It seems to me that the slight errors in describing the process show that it is actually a relatively simple thing. People are trying to describe what they do when on auto pilot and, although they do know their left from their right, their brains haven't retained the specifics. That being said, they will have no problem navigating the route again when they physically need to.

Someone suggested applying for an e-visa whilst here, stating "that it's cheaper and longer.
Wrong! $75 dollars for 3 months. Sod that....... 8)
Ps: That's £58 quid ffs.......
Pss: Mind you, I have had a go at people moaning about their change in the visa office,
when they are moaning about only 50p, tight sods....

Chris, like I said earlier, it's been a while since I've travelled that route but it really isn't that difficult. Certainly when I did it, it was well signed and there were plenty of English speaking staff around to help travellers. Let's face it, your friends are unlikely to be the only ones travelling to Luxor via Cairo that day - so either it will be the blind leading the blind, or else common sense will prevail.
