UK Repatriation Flight update 07/04/2020

Post by HEPZIBAH »

I am amazed that there are still so many people requiring repatriation to the UK. However, the FCO do seem to be doing their best to assist.

Yes me too Hepzibah, I find it amazing that those who want to leave haven't done so already.

I do wonder if that the fact that the Corona Virus has become more real in Egypt, with all that it could likely mean, that some who thought they'd sit it out, or with a 'flights will start again soon' attitude have now got a bit panicked.

May be so, but where do you go? My daughter who lives well away from other habitation in the country side and is able to go for a walk without meeting anyone else is heartily sick of being cooped up. She described the UK as being like armagedon.
Think I am happy to stay where I am without running the risk of getting on a plane with a load of other people and breathing the re-cycled air.

Carrie, I think the thing is that these flights are for those how are tourists in the sense of being their on holiday, as opposed to living there albeit on a tourist visa.
I guess some could have gone out when their holiday flights were still flying, before the 'Don'tTravel' advice came in, but then couldn't get back because their flights got cancelled or planes got grounded.
'...but where do you go?' I think the answer is 'home'.

I've been following posts of some people caught out in other countries. The big problem they have found is of course the hotels closed, so they had to leave. Private accommodation was OK for a while but that bumps up the cost, and then gradually a lot of private accommodation has closed. There is also then the concerns about visas, language difficulties and more administration issues - permits for all sorts of things. Add to that the increasing concerns and suspicions of local people, who naturally are worried for their own selves and families - availability of food and essentials in the shops; concerns about the local healthcare availability; etc. It all becomes a frightening mess and retreating home is probably the least complicated and safe option.

I thank God I'm back in Blighty, I'm pretty good at personal survival but luckily I left before all of this.
It's being surrounded by idiots that worries me but, at least here the idiots are slowly learning.
When it really hits Africa the dead will be lying in the streets, perhaps not in Luxor but deeper
into Africa it will be a massacre, it doesn't take a genius to arrive at that conclusion..

Yikes! I really do have to proof read my own posts more often. My brain is becoming lazy and too many spelling mistakes are slipping past the end of my fingers.
A new pair of glasses might help too, but getting my brain in gear might be easier than getting new specs at the moment.

Perhaps you needed to go via the the government registration first. I don't know if that is the case, but it is a possibility.

Your guess is as good as mine.
You could of course do an online search to the airline websites, although that would very much depend on when you hope to travel.

Have they?
I read it to mean that there are no longer (and haven't been for a while I think) any scheduled ie 'normal' flights that a traveller would generally book.

I didn't read it in relation to the re-patriation flights, the last planned one from Egypt to the UK having already left.

Funny old world but Egyptair are still running the MS778 from London to Cairo with no sign of it ending for now. Maybe they're taking Egyptians home in time for Ramadan? Today's flight 16th arrives around 7pm.

Interesting - I can't see a departure for Egyptair from LHR for today - both flights won't show whether I put the arrival location or airline into the LHR searchbox on departures.
To double check this I went to the Cairo airport arrivals and there is nothing showing for arrival from London due today.
Could it be a flight that is being used for commerce rather than passengers that you are seeing?

When I put up this link it was live so by the time you looked at it it would have arrived and gone off the screen. Silly me I should have realised that.

If there was nothing on the flight boards at the airport perhaps it was a freighter flight.

Crewmeal, I had too much time on my hands earlier which is why I looked. Searches sometimes amuse and/or divert my mind for a while. 😊
When I looked at LHR departures I clicked the small search box and chose Egyptair as my refined search. 2 flight numbers came up but when I clicked on them they weren't recognised. I tried again but instead used Cairo. Again two flights showed for today but both came up as not recognised.
I decided to cross check it ( more diversion tactics for my brain ) with Cairo airport. It showed arrivals for the whole day (not that many flights into Cairo from anywhere at the moment) but nothing from London.
Apart from the freight theory, another answer could be that that plane wasn't a direct flight at the moment but a hopper from London to XYZand then Cairo. I read recently that some flights (not specific Egyptair) are doing some hopping and picking up at two or more airports before reaching final destination. Presumably, if that were the case the arrivals board would have shown last airport called at.
