Direct Flights from London to Luxor

Post by Chris »

It seems that Egyptair have now postponed the direct flights to Monday 26 October. They will, no doubt, probably be postponed again. Will I ever be able to get back to home?

Not by direct flight. At least not for some time.

But it’s not too difficult to get to Hurghada.....and you may be able to travel from there to Luxor by road.

You can still get back it's just not direct. Change at Cairo.

As far as I can see you would need to spend a night in Cairo before connecting to Luxor the following day as threre is only one flight per day now. The cost is horrific from what I've seen. (This is the day I should have travelled)

LHR - CAI 8th Aug £498.25 one way

LHR - LXR 8th Aug £513 one way but a night in CAI at your own expense I guess.

Triple those figures if you want Business Class.

And you can get to Hurghada from Gatwick for less than £100.

ALL foreigners wishing to get to Luxor will now require a PCR COVID test carried out within 72 hours of arrival.....whether they intend to come in via Cairo or Hurghada.

The actual Arabic notice, translated in full, reads....

Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, issued a decision to ban entry to all arrivals to Egypt, whether by land, sea or air, without the arrival being accompanied by a statement indicating that a pcr analysis to detect the emerging corona virus with a negative result at most 72 hours before arriving on Egyptian territory.

The decision stipulated that Arab and foreign tourists coming by direct airlines to Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, Taba, Marsa Alam, Matrouh airports are excluded from this decision, provided that all means of transport, whether by land, sea or air, are prohibited from transporting these tourists from the governorates of South Sinai to the rest of the governorates of the Republic. Without being accompanied by a statement of pcr analysis.

Note that arrivals to these Red Sea destinations ( or is it just South Sinai?) will not be able to travel to other governorates (e.g Cairo or Luxor) without undergoing, and passing, a PCR test.

I wonder if they'd accept an NHS text or email which was 24 hours old. I guess not, but I'm sure many Egyptians are glad the NHS exisits.

Yet another nail in the tourism coffin.

They do seem a tad “conflicted” when it comes to tackling this COVID problem.

As many countries are recognising, the tactics for minimising the spread of infections are likely to be unhelpful if you also want to attract tourists. But at least there’s some realism in the Egyptian approach.

They have effectively barred foreigners from entry...except for the Red Sea resorts and Marsa Matrouh. Visitors to these delightful places will be unable to stray outside the area. Mind you.......I suspect most visitors to these destinations have little interest in Egypt’s cultural attractions, being happy to bake on a beach all day swigging booze.

So Egypt, which already claims to have modest levels of infection (ahem...) can say that they are not adding to their problems by inviting foreigners (who will have signed a piece of paper saying they feel fine) and keeping them all together in one place.

Perhaps they haven’t realised that the hotel staff...often from outlying cities...are no longer “locked down” and, having acquired God -knows-what from Olga & Ivan recently arrived from Kiev, can take it to their nest of relatives in Assiut.

Clarification please - Ive got flights booked 16 Sept meaning I'd need to get a test 14 Sept.(13th is a Sunday) However the info I've looked at all says you need to have symptoms before you can have a test. How does one get a test without symptoms to PROVE you've got no symptoms?

Loads of clinics offering tests. Try Google. About £100.

Or, you could fake symptoms....but timing might be an issue

EasyJet don’t start their direct flights until Sept.....€36 one way.

Pegasus are currently flying via Istanbul to Stansted.....£169 one way.

Have a look at routing through Zurich or Geneva (Swiss Air or EasyJet)...cheap, but timings might be awkward.

I’ve just booked a round trip in Sept....Gatwick - Geneva- HRG and return direct to GTW. Total cost £110.

A friends daughter in the UK contacted a drive in centre & expained she was going to a family funeral in Devon and didn't want to risk taking the virus to elderly relatives and both she and her boyfriend got tests no problem & no charge. Maybe you could do something similar Christine?

EgyptAir also now require overseas medical insurance cover which I think is different to ordinary travel insurance I may be wrong on this they change requirements at the drop of a hat. Also much more expensive. Covid free test certificate ? Do they want a fit to fly certificate which is costly or would they accept a email reply which you get after a drive in centre it's all vague to me. Anybody with more info would be helpful to me thanks in advance tony

As far as I am aware....and this has not changed to my knowledge....EgyptAir only require completion of this declaration :

Of course, for many people, the very fact that they are travelling to Egypt will have invalidated their insurance. It appears not to be an issue troubling EgyptAir....but might be relevant if you need to make a claim!
