Projects for establishing a train interlinking different regions within Egypt, including Luxor to Hurghada and 6th of October to Aswan and Luxor, were discussed on Wednesday in a meeting between Minister of Transportation Hesham Arafat and officials from China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation CCECC, reports Egypt Independent.

Adding that a Spanish consultation firm has already arranged for preparatory research on both those ventures, Arafat believes that these projects will help promote tourism as well as facilitate the journey for the increasing number of travelers going to the Red Sea.

Arafat adds that the projects will likely be carried out by the government through the public - private partnership (PPP) and the build-operate-transfer (BOT) system.

These projects come in an effort to increase efficiency and connectivity.

Earlier in 2017, an agreement for USD 739 million electric trains connecting 10th of Ramadan City and New Cairo to the new administrative capital was signed in September by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Chinese company Xi Jinping. In 2015, USD 600 million went into a contract to CCECC for the improvement of Egypt's existing railways.

I would have thought they would have got the present rail infrustructure sorted first after all the problems there are.

There is no rail track between Luxor and Hurghada so that would be a big undertaking for a start. It would be cheaper to commence flights between the two locations. Infrastructure already exists and they probably have a few planes knocking around somewhere.

Well since they have nomads camping out at every mobile phone tower protecting the solar power panels how much more employment would be generated by building a train track?
Price of steel here has gone through the roof just think what you could get for a few kilometers of train rails.

The track you have seen is the remains of the potash train track which ran from the mines in the mountains to Middle Egypt. I can remember seeing an long wagon train on that many years ago. The track was ripped up and stolen post 2011. It is a different gauge to the passenger train tracks anyway.

May well end up with one of these pull me push you rail car like they used in the gold rush. I don't really see any point in it, there are far more pressing things they can invest in.
