Are there any good lawyers in Luxor (wait) who can be relied on in circumstances such as this?

I know from some old posts comments have been made about immigration and property lawyers in Luxor but I am assuming that this type of 'offense' requires a different and specialist lawyer or are they all generalists/not much good/got to go to Cairo.

I'm not looking for specific recommendations (at this stage!) just a general view bearing in mind that civil and criminal issues must happen for ex-pats.

You are quite correct in what you say Zooropa, I apologize in not reading fully into your statement. It was I that mentioned the tile throwing incident which turned out to be 'a local youth' problem. The police here are not willing to get involved in large group incidents as they fear for there own safety to much.

Well Hafiz, those questions you post, do not often occur for your average ex-pat in Luxor, but when they do, I promise you, they get a very, very sharp reminder that, although they live in a cacoon, called Luxor,........this is infact the third world, especially with regards to law and order.

Zooropa wrote:That was not my point Dusak, im more concerned with the stories that the police don't do anything! or very little! Thats what would put me off. Was it you (cant remember) who witnessed youths throwing tiles down onto the lower corniche while the police just looked on?

Thats concerning, as is (if substantiated) them letting the purse snatcher off scott free. There have been reports of increased petty theiving in Luxor and news that one had been caught and punished would reassure visitors and of course will have the reverse effect if they are let off!

Take the camera thread, everyone was saying it was doubtful that a crew member did it because of the punishments and loss of job risk.

MMMM, if they are letting people who snatch purses which in my view is worse than discovering you have been robbed as apposed to being assaulted or man handled then what does that say about the police?

A Belgian lady of my acquaintance, staying here for some time, a regular visitor, had her purse stolen a couple of weeks ago on WB. The thief was recently caught in the act by police. He was found to have committed this crime at least 4 times recently.

Its quite common throughout Luxor now WI, unfortunately the Police, apart from the Traffic Police, who seem to have a nice little money earning business now are very stale, fragmented and powerless. If you have anything happening on the legal side you will find you have to do the investigation and then report to the Police who will do the simple work. The Court system is the same, stagnant and ineffective, unless of course you do the work for them. The police do not even know where half of the people including ex pats are even living! And the visa office will not even confer with any of the other departments.

Going back to the original topic - I wonder if this will have any effects on TB when he and his wife need to renew their visas? They own property and run a small business and it does seem that the local government in Luxor seize on any excuse NOT to issue long term visas to ex-pats if they can get away with it.

You do feel the need at times to give support towards your fellow ex-pat and from day one I was inclined to start an internet support group entitled:- Free the ex-pat slapper. But I soon realized this would only have confused the issue as there are so many of them living here. :vs

I think all the problems in Luxor are financially fused, not just the local people but all nationalities living here. In a way myself and wife retired here 3 years ago, but never take anything for granted because things change every day. We have been asked many times what our work is, but our ages prevent us from work now in the UK and we feel the same in Luxor, why work if you do not have to. Its always nice to have a little extra money, but you soon get used to the way of life and settle down.

If a place is running short of money, frustrations begin on all sides, if people cannot feed their families again frustrations occur, its a problem.

I am sure that many ex pats living in Luxor live on a knife edge, and that is understandable, many came here for the life, the climate and the peace. myself and wife consider ourselves fortunate in the aspect we do not have to look for extra income and therefore live a fairly comfortable life, if not a flush life.

Neither of us drink, so that is a big help, we do like a Shisha though, 5 a day, we shop mainly on the West Bank, now traders have got to know us we get decent prices, we just prefer the village life living among the local people. I gave up the Facebook Site almost a year ago so no longer get involved with the C--p that brings, it maybe that a lot of people having a hard time here is because of the rubbish the threats and the accusation they make to other people on these such Social Networks. I do not miss them at all. Besides that what people are saying behind my back is of little concern to me, knowing that once they have finished with me they will start on someone else.

Regarding the visa talk, I think the Government do not really mind us being here because we put a fair amount into the local economy, but at the same time they do expect us to withhold the law and the customs of the City. I could not see any reason for revoking a visa if you follow these traditions, laws and customs. The same with most Countries in the world.

I do hope this doesn't mean our friend Mr Edward John Jennings will be deported following his discharge from prison, now that he has a criminal record in Egypt, and has also served a custodial sentence.

Bombay you are so right, Facebook with the Faceless people that use it is no longer a pleasure, I used to love it, but it is just a medium for people to argue, spin yarns, use bad language, spread gossip, tell lies, create false identities so on, and so on. I am starting to think that half of the people that use it just use it thinking it gives them what they think, power over others, or it gives them a power/control boost, when in actual fact it just makes them look prats, highly uneducated, and full of spite, revenge and venom.

Like I say I have been off it now for a year or near on, I do not miss it at all now, its like cigarettes, once you have broke the habit the feeling is great. I am not against Social /networks used in the proper context, but Facebook is now just a site for half the sad and lonely people people of the world to make mischief for others. I say let them if that is their only entertainment in life.

The good friends I had on Facebook maybe still use it I do not know, but we do keep in touch but by use of e-mail, more private and more personal.

I agree with what you say about FB Choc, its just a pity that the one or two members that use this site and FB do not take your advise about not placing disparaging and personal insulting remarks about people that creates a feeling of embarrassment in the genuine imbeciles of this world.

To be fare to the person we probably would have given the same or a similar knee jerk reaction if the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident are as reported. I think that he would prefer an end to it all. To WIZARD, many folk are still wondering as to your position as you post very little information on the subject of your refused visa for obvious reasons so you should understand why, better than the rest of us, why new information is in short supply. And I'm not being disrespectful or critical towards you when I say this.
