MINIMUM CHARGE NOW ILLEGAL IN EGYPT?
09/08/2016 12:49
According to the Consumer Protection Agency, we may have been paying minimum charge fees where they *legally* don't apply.
Egyptians may no longer have to pay minimum charges in particular places, according to Major-General Atef Yacoub, director of the Consumer Protection Agency.
According to Youm7, Yacoub asserts that the only places permitted to apply minimum charge are those with a tourist license, and to obtain that, businesses require very specific permissions from the Ministry of Tourism.
Luckily, for Egyptians, authorities may actually take action against cafeterias or restaurants that apply the minimum charge policy. Yacoub emphasises that if anyone suspects a specific place is not abiding by the law and does not have a tourist license while insisting on applying minimum charges, the consumer should immediately report them to the Consumer Protection Agency.
With this information now available, it's safe to say many customers will be disputing their bill and asking to see a tourist license.

Re: Minimum Charge
There has been a Consumer Protection Agency (or office of similar name and function) in Egypt for many years. In fact I think it was on Luxor4U that I first heard of it when I was a very new member.newcastle wrote:Consumer Protection Agency?...well I never You learn something new every dayHEPZIBAH wrote:MINIMUM CHARGE NOW ILLEGAL IN EGYPT?

Re: Minimum Charge
Major-General Atef Yacoub must have done something really dreadful to have been retired into THAT post
Maybe they should hand out a synopsis of the main consumer protection regulations to all new arrivals...with their visa.
Might save a lot of heartache when shopping, dining out etc.
Or possibly not......
