Italian guy had mysterious 'letters' carved into his body

Post by DJKeefy » Thu Sep 08, 2016 8:51 pm

Cambridge graduate had mysterious 'letters' carved into his body by torturers in Egypt, post-mortem reveals.

A Cambridge University graduate who was murdered in Egypt had mysterious letters carved into his corpse during several days of torture, a post-mortem examination has revealed.

Giulio Regeni, a 28-year-old Italian who was studying for a PhD at Girton College, disappeared in Cairo in January, on the fifth anniversary of the Tahrir Square demonstrations which led to the downfall of president Hosni Mubarak.

He was researching the activities of anti-government trade unions. His horrifically tortured body was found dumped in a ditch on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital a week later.

A post-mortem by the Italian authorities has found that not only was he sadistically beaten over a period of several days, his torturers used knives to carve what appeared to be four or five letters into his skin.

A letter resembling an X was cut into his left hand, while other markings were carved into his back, above his right eye and on his forehead. "They used him like a blackboard," his mother, Paola, said.

The macabre details emerged from a 220-page post-mortem report conducted by two Italian coroners, Professors Vittorio Fineschi and Marcello Chiarotti.

They found that the Cambridge graduate had suffered broken bones, five shattered teeth and cuts, bruises and burns all over his body. “In the dorsal region, to the left of the spine, there is a group of marks which seem to make up a letter,” the autopsy said. “It is reasonable to hypothetise that he was hit with kicks, fists, sticks and hammers,” the report said.

He finally died when his neck was broken.

The Egyptian authorities initially claimed that Mr Regeni had died in a traffic incident or that he had been the victim of a violent kidnapping or even a gay lovers’ feud.

Those claims were shown by the post-mortem to be baseless and preposterous, his family said. The suffering he underwent was “the work of professional torturers,” his parents, Paola and Claudio Regeni, said. “We cannot understand how it can be doubted that poor Giulio was systematically tortured.”

Italy has accused the Egyptian government of stone-walling the investigation into the student’s death and failing to provide meaningful cooperation in the inquiry into who was responsible, amid claims that it was elements of the police or intelligence services who tortured and murdered him because of his research into unions.

A team of Egyptian investigators arrived in Rome on Thursday for two days of meetings with Italian police and prosecutors, who hope they will be more forthcoming than in the past few months.

The Egyptian team, led by prosecutor-general Nabil Ahmed Sadek, was expected to present new information about the killing.

“We’ve become used to being thrown red herrings,” Mr Regeni’s parents said. “But we will wait and we will never stop seeking the truth.” Patrizio Gonnella, the head of Antigone, an Italian association for prisoners’ rights, said: “We hope that this time there will be a lot more cooperation from the Egyptians and that all the documents and phone records that have been requested will be provided.”

Mr Regeni’s academic supervisor at Cambridge, Dr Maha Abdelrahman, who specialises in human rights, labour relations and civil society in Egypt, has been questioned by Italian prosecutors on two occasions on the research he was conducting.

Cambridge University has denied reports in the Italian press, apparently based on leaks from police and prosecutors, that it has failed to cooperate with the investigation. “Despite her own distress at Giulio's death, we understand that Maha remains ready to talk to the Italian prosecutors should they make a request through normal channels,” the university said in a statement last month.

“We are deeply disturbed that false claims that the university is unwilling to cooperate continue to circulate.

“Constant leaks and misreporting not only reduce the pressure on the Egyptians to get to the truth, but detract attention from what should be the focus of the Italian investigation – to find out who killed Giulio.”

On Thursday, a spokesperson for the university said: “Our thoughts are with Giulio’s family and friends at this distressing time, and we echo calls for the investigation into Giulio’s brutal and senseless murder to be pursued with a renewed sense of urgency.”

Angelino Alfano, Italy’s interior minister, said in March that an initial post-mortem on the body "confronted us with something inhuman, something animal".

Mrs Regeni has said her son’s corpse was so badly disfigured that she recognised only his nose.

I agree, you do have to wonder as to why this sort of thing can happen seemingly with impunity. :(

The apparent impunity of the security forces had long been an issue in Egypt.

It's clear that a significant part of the population and the international media have formed the view that the security apparatus had some hand in the death of the Italian student, despite repeated denials.

It was harsh treatment by the authorities which prompted the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi in Tuniisia and triggered the Arab Spring. Events more or less repeated in Egypt with the death of Khaled Saeed.

The death of a foreigner however does not resonate so much with the Egyptian public who are, in any case, rather used to this kind of thing.

The continuing story of the Italian student does nothing for Egypt's reputation in the court of world public opinion but I doubt it bothers the regime that much. They have their line and are sticking to it...a policy that has always worked well in the past.

As far as the Italian government is concerned, I fully expect commercial interests to outweigh any outrage they might feel .

As I wrote on this forum sometime ago,..............sorry, I think I've agreed to give references when I say this,...........

Visiting Luxor - Thursday 7th April 2016 - A-four.

'In my opinion, I would suggest that any ex-pat living in Egypt or regular tourists should give this subject a very wide berth.

Mr Giulio Regini was a student in Girton College, Cambridge University. This college is well known as a training ground for those wishing to go forward into what we call the intelligence Service. It helps not that he was a student in the Dept of Politics and International Studies.

I feel there is much more to this story that is not reported in the media, and perhaps there has been errors on both sides'.

My opinion in this matter has not changed, and it will not in the short/medium term. Remember, when in Egypt whether you are an "ex-pat" living on a short term visa or a general tourist, you are a guest,..........

..........again, I would give this subject a very wide berth, the media evidently do not have the full story, and Girton College will certainly not help, though for sure a certain person on here will have the full sp. :wi .

You said the right words, no one knows the right/full story. Without the concrete facts relating to this case, no one can start mentioning the police, security forces without those full and unquestionable facts. The guy could of just been unlucky, wrong time, wrong place and coming to the attention of a criminal element, or an undocumented sadistic killer as I doubt very much that they are unique to the US of A. Its very easy to lay the blame, but impossible to retrieve the words when discovering they were aimed in the wrong direction.

I hardly think that given Egypts long history of physical and human rights abuse that there is much doubt as to the perpetrators of this particular crime. :(

And why should that be either interesting or affect any plans that I may have A4?
I have often posted things that are negative about Egypt and their regime and still visited the country. Please do not try and imply that they (the authorities) have a clue as to who I am or any details that may cause me future problems, because they don’t. Now that may be a different matter if you currently reside in the country when caution may be wise when criticising the current regime. 8)

I disagree, just because you have a bad past track record does not necessarily mean that you are then responsible for every indecent . We live in a world containing many players of the game.

Well if you want examples of "a bad past track record" you don't need to look very far, regardless of the regime in power, so on balance the most likely culprits are as the Italians are claiming.

I often wonder who finance certain organisations, I also wonder who really own what in the field of what some call news,, but then again some call propaganda.

An absolutely fantastic one liner from Dusak. - we live in a world containing many players of the game.

That was my initial reaction Newcastle  and so predictable.
As to the rest, well at least I give links to my information sources, so anyone may judge for themselves if they choose to believe it or not. A far cry from pretending to have friends in high places who must remain nameless etc. nudge nudge, wink wink. ;)

My point is ,........certain people, organisations, and media outlets have their own secret agenda for getting their 'message' across especially on the Internet. For example, Freedomhouse.org gets between 60 to 80% of its finances from the U.S. Treasury. With regards the Huffingtonpost, I think most people will find it rather difficult to find out who actually really owns it.

I suppose my point here is that most people believe what they read in the media, and in the past that has been so, today in the fast moving 24 hour internet news service, we have to look carefully who is behind it.

I suppose it's the same with Forums, some people may not realise at the time, that others have secret agendas, however, gradually even the dumbest realise this,

P.S. - Where have all the bar flies gone. :wi .

I suppose it's like these Forums in a way, I notice often that some people have hidden agendas and it easy to detect after a while, and I suppose so do others. However, I could never understand bar-flies,...........but then again, when there is no meat left on that old bone, even they clear off. :wi .
