3,300 Egyptian Children Hospitalized After Food Poisoning.
More than 3,300 children were hospitalized in Egypt on Tuesday after an outbreak of food poisoning at several state-run primary schools, state-owned news media said.
The mass poisoning, in the impoverished Upper Egypt province of Sohag, north of Luxor, was one of the biggest food-safety cases to hit the country in years.
Officials suspect that school lunches may have been contaminated, and they have opened an investigation. Samples from the lunches, consisting of processed cheese cubes, dry sesame paste bars and loaves of bread, were being analyzed, they added.
Children, most younger than 12, began vomiting within an hour of eating the lunches, Ahmed Nashaat, a Sohag lawmaker, said in a telephone interview. A total of 3,353 children became ill, and at least 50 ambulances were sent to the schools, state news media said. Since then, all but 17 of the students have recovered and been discharged. No deaths or serious complications were reported.
The ordeal revived complaints over the declining quality of Egypt’s public education and health systems. “It is ridiculous how this keeps on happening,” Mr. Nashaat said. “It is not hard to store biscuits and look at the expiration date.”
Apparently in an attempt to deflect some of the anger, the governor of Sohag, Ayman Abdel-Moneim, quickly suspended the distribution of government meals and demanded that changes be made to how they were stored and transported to schools.
Tuesday’s outbreak was one in a long series that have occurred in public schools and universities nationwide recently. Earlier this month, more than 214 students were found to have food poisoning caused by government meals at several schools in the provinces of Minya and Assiut.
Outrage over such instances of perceived government neglect was a main cause of the popular uprising in 2011 that toppled the government of President Hosni Mubarak. “It was not just the parents who were angry in Sohag,” Mr. Nashaat said. “Everyone believes that was the result of neglect. This is leading people to conclude that the people in charge don’t care about their kids.”

Re: 3,300 Egyptian Children Hospitalized After Food Poisonin
Back in Egypt!! - Later on Tuesday, however, the Egyptian cabinet information center said that 3,353 students became ill after eating the small meals
Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi ordered on Thursday the urgent formation of a committee to investigate a school meal poisoning incident that led to the food poisoning of hundreds of students in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Sohag.
"The President is closely following the incident and is receiving a updated reports on the elementary school students' health conditions," a statement from the President's office read.
The statement did not include details on the nature of the committee or who would sit on it.
Egypt's health ministry announced on Tuesday that some 800 students from eight schools in Sohag had been hospitalised with suspected food poisoning after eating school meals.
According to a source in Sohag's branch of the education ministry, the meals -- which are disbursed through the ministry -- included cheese and halva.
Later on Tuesday, however, the Egyptian cabinet information center said that 3,353 students became ill after eating the small meals, affirming that all cases but 17 had left hospitals after being treated.
Samples from the meals were reserved for testing following the incident. Samples were also taken from the affected students to determine the cause of the food poisoning.
Egypt's state-run National School Feeding Programme (NSFP) covers 13.5 million students with a total budget of 957 million Egyptian pounds.
The World Food Programme has been supporting the NSFP since 1968, and currently contributes fortified meals to 636,000 children nationwide.
Egypt has been aiming to expand its school food programme, with El-Sisi stressing that expansion in the NSFP was a priority for the state.
The European Union is one of the major contributors to school food programmes in Egypt, along with the United States, Germany and private-sector donors.
This is not the first food poisoning incident to occur at government-run schools this month.
Earlier in March, around 200 students were diagnosed with food poisoning after eating cafeteria meals at two schools in the southern governorate of Minya.
Days later, 14 students in Upper Egypt's Assiut suffered food poisoning, prompting the health ministry to halt the distribution of school meals in the governorate until food safety tests could be carried out.

That's only 70LE per kid PER ANNUM.carrie wrote:950 Million pounds to feed lunch to 13.5 million kids and all they get is a cheese triangle, bread and a biscuit?
I'm surprised they get as much as they do!
Outside contributions , such as the World Food Program, must be vital in supplying even this meagre fare.

Maybe it's your arithmetic Carriecarrie wrote:surely that's wrong Newcastle, I work it out at more that 7 million per kid. Perhaps someone has the figures wrong.
950 million pounds divided between 13.5 million kids is 70 pounds per kid.

Probably the schools are as unhygenic as the rest of the place. Could have been all the fly s--- on the bread and the kids thought it was chocolate bits. Oh my god flag is still Egypt! How come we are miles away. Normally anyehere else the schoolwould have been closed down for the health inspectors to do their work. Oh! Silly me for mentioning health inspectors.9
