Coptic Churches ... security concerns

Post by HEPZIBAH »

I read a similar article earlier today which included the Catholic and Evangelical Churches in Egypt.

Coptic Churches suspend conferences, monastery trips over security concerns

July 13, 2017

Egypt’s main Coptic Church decided on Thursday to suspend holding any conferences and organizing the church-sponsored trips to monasteries, Coptic Orthodox Church Head Bolus Hailm said.

Halim told Egypt Independent that the decision came following consultations with the Interior Ministry, which recommended the suspension of the aforementioned activities until the end of the month of July.

“Due to security concerns raised among churches’ officials against any gatherings of Copts in Egypt, the churches affiliated to the Coptic Orthodox Church consulted the main church to coordinate with the Interior Ministry to undertake any action,” he explained.

He further asserted that the Interior Ministry did not send any instructions obligating churches to suspend their activities.

The Coptic churches’ decision came following nearly three months of deadly suicide bomb attacks that targeted churches in Tanta and Alexandria, killing 45 people.

The massacre was followed by another deadly attack on a bus of Copts en route to a monastery in the Minya desert, in which IS militants opened fire against them and killed more than 27 people.

The IS-affiliated group ‘Sinai Province’ in North Sinai has released numerous warnings and threats against Copts in Egypt, including threats to bomb churches.

In an interview with IS-affiliated newspaper ‘al-Nabaa’, the ‘Sinai Province’ leader Abu Hager al-Hashmi said that his militants will target Copts anywhere in Egypt and warned Muslims keep their distance from churches and Coptic gatherings.

Putting all these posts together, just of this page alone, do you get the feeling that something monumental is about to happen?

Oh yes, Egypt's inflation is presently running at 30% officially, so I suggest somewhat higher.looking at the whole collection of financial figures nothing is really making sense as to any 'light at the end of the tunnel'.

Caught the local bus today now costs 1.25 le, nothing to me but ever increasing prices are putting more and more pressure on the populace.
Lot of complaining and I haven't been asked for ages when I think the tourists will return I think the reality is finally sinking in. Everyone just soldiers on.
