Terrorism - Military Links

Post by Hafiz »

Reuters has turned against the Egyptian government in the last year or so. When Reuters, the gold standard, turns against you there is little hope.

Its latest story is about radical elements in the armed forces/radicals who have left the armed forces and joined insurgent groups in Egypt.

Its interesting that the examples given are of captains rather than just hacks. If there are violent former middle level officers throwing bombs its not impossible that there are equivalent non-bomb throwing dissidents still within the armed forces.

Whatever the facts the story confirms everyone’s view that the armed forces of Egypt are amongst the most underwhelming in the world. Their last victory was 170 years ago and they stayed out of WW1 and 2.

Other comments by Reuters are significant:

“In recent months, hundreds of members of the security forces have been discharged because of their political or religious affiliations, the security officials said. Reasons for dismissing officers included refusal to arrest protesters at a demonstration or anti-government social media posts.”

And:
The communications system of the security forces has been hacked by the insurgents.

Still what would Reuters know – they are just dreadful Jews/Imperialists/Muslim haters (although there is no evidence for any of this and they remain the most trusted news agency service in the world).

As is well documented over decades the full picture of military performance is much worse – but no one is held to account for this and the local commentary/scholarship is suppressed.

I don’t think any poor/middle income country in the world spends proportionally more on its army/security/police than Egypt – but most of this money is wasted.

13 million Egyptians voted for the islamist candidate Morsi in the 2012 presidential election - compared to 12 million for his opponent Shafiq.

Historically, the Egyptian police, security forces and military have always had a higher proportion of muslims to copts than the general population.

These 'islamist sympathisers ' will not have disappeared entirely, despite the bodged job they made of their brief tenure and Morsi's attempts to hijack the constitution. One would suspect that the police, security forces and military harbour a proportion of them.

Some polls indicate that there is majority support amongst the Egyptian public for a more "conservative" interpretation of Islam, including the application of Sharia law.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-isla ... TK20130430

http://www.pewforum.org/2013/04/30/the- ... -morality/

Although the severe clampdown on islamism, and the Muslim Brotherhoood in particular, has curtailed open expression of islamist tendencies, it would be naive to believe that there doesn't exist a significant number of officers in the forces of law and order who might be disenchanted with the current regime. Indeed some of the repression of recent years may have hardened their stance. The rapprochement with Israel and continued 'cosying up' to the US are not popular with the public at large

That some of these are sufficiently disenchanted to switch allegiance - leaking information to subvert the State, or worse - should come as no surprise.

Not much difference with Thailand, just by saying you do not like the Royal family, you do not like Buddhism, you disagree with the military can land you inside the Bangkok Hilton, locals or foreigners. The army run the country, the local police take a very hard line for the smallest criminal acts, they believe wholeheartedly in torture, removing those that do not toe the political line out of existence, again towards their own or foreigners visiting or living there as an expat. But apparently the tourist police are a far better bunch than, let us say some ''other'' countries have to contend with.

I think the next election will be interesting, interesting to see if the people have learned a lesson yet?

Has the new election posters all over Luxor been put up yet, who are the opponents if any, and does the law allow political prisoners to become opponents?
I wonder if the people will feel the last few years have been great, or if they feel the incredible price rises have been warranted, and the fact salaries have not improves for anyone accept the Security are warranted. Will the people who a few years ago did not find too much trouble feeding their families, and are now struggling to find the money for food or medicines when they or a member of the family fall ill.
Do they appreciate the vast improvements to Luxor over the past few years, or have they not noticed it.
There is a lot to play for at this election, but will it be a wise vote or a wasted vote.
Has for the political and religious world being tied together in the way it is in the middle east and surrounding countries, I have never been an advocate for, they are two entirely different things and can be used in many ways to disrupt rather than build a country. Religion is a faith that you either believe in or not, you either fear your god or you don't, politics is the way of how a country is run financially and lawfully, if you know how to. I think many will be looking closely at the results especially one man who is looking to to save a few bucks of foreign aid.
Things are not running too great in the political world in the UK at the moment with Brexit etc, but at least the leader, weak or not is intent on delivering the result of the referendum. The Archbishop of Canterbury, and other religious leaders are not saying much. The only people opening their dribbling mouths are those with a vested interest in Europe, who will loose by the UK leaving. Most others will not be effected. Anyway the State Pension goes up 3% in April the biggest rise for years, suits me and to be onest that's all I care for politics and has for the other I care even less.

Oh dear looks like the ghost writer has given up the ghost.
Lucky man getting an increase in the state pension it makes no difference to me I haven't had a rise for years because I informed the authorities that I lived here. I wonder if you will continue to get increases there in Cyprus MT when the UK leaves the EU?

I think that a safer option would be for them to discover what a cat has to keep its tail in full stiffy mode when excited, or expecting something nice, or is in recite of several hand strokes, thus removing the need for any chemical stimuli. :D
