Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
I'm with LovelyLadyLux in my opinion. What a great film the first one was. A classic feelgood movie.

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
I read the original book when it first came out, and before it was retitled to fit the film which was coming out based on it. It was a fun read, a little farcical in parts and I'm glad they were able to do away with that in the film script. However, I did think the book was good. I didn't see the film until some while after it had come out on DVD. I enjoyed it, but that was very much because of the great cast who knew how to work together well and spark off each other. It was also one of the very rare times I've not cringed (well too much) at Bill Nighy!
I am looking forward to seeing the sequel, but doubt I'll get to see it any time soon.

I liked the original book much more than the film, which was quite different but ok.

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
I just remembered that I reviewed the original book in Literary Corner. I've just been back to see what I wrote about it then and my opinion has not changed. I posted the following on Sat Feb 11, 2012 3:53 pm.
These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach
Also being marketed now as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel along side the film of the same title.
This is a delightful read. It is a gentle and amusing look at a group of individuals who are all of mature years - if not attitude to life - who find themselves at a 'Hotel for Retired Gentlepersons' in India. You can't help but care for most of the characters. It does contain sexual references but it is so well done you can't be offended. It's been months since I read it but even now I can chuckle at some of the scenarios!
An ideal holiday/coffee break read.
FILM:
I've been seeing lots of promo's for the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel recently and kept thinking that it sounded like the same scenario as the book I'd read, but typically I couldn't remember the title. Now I know it's one and the same and I am really looking forward to seeing the film. It's got a fantstic cast so I'm sure they'll do it justice. (Oh please, I hope they do!)

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Hepzibah - sorry you find Bill Nighy cringe-worthy. I've
grown rather fond of him.
If you get the chance, listen to him on BBC radio 4/4extra
in The Charles Paris mysteries. With a witty script by
Jeremy Brett he's brilliant as an actor/amateur detective with
a liking for booze and a not totally unconnected marriage
problem.
(Dame Judi is apparently best pals with him)
One of the charms of The Best Marigold ... is the beguiling
attractiveness of wrinkles!

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
I'm not sure I'd like him on radio either - part of my cringing is the voice - but I will try to be fair and have a look for the programme you've mentioned.Remus wrote:Hepzibah - sorry you find Bill Nighy cringe-worthy. I've

I do agree with your last comment about The Best Marigold Hotel. It is good to see roles for so many (dare I say) aging but accomplished actors and actresses that show there is still life beyond the wrinkles. ;-)

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
It was a greeeeat film and enjoyed it even better than no 1.
We went to the "silver screening" at 2pm and the cinema was packed...just one seat on front row free.
The humour was brilliant, and of course the cast were excellent, it was poignant in parts but the bollywood dance scenes were fantastic. Would recommend it, somehow it is better seen on the big screen

Lets hope more American actors come to work in the Independent film companies over here, getting bored with themselves as spiderman 6 of transformers 10, just incase they lose the art of acting….

Wasn't that "Bill Nighy"implicated in some form of sex abuse/scandal a few years ago?

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
I have no idea, but reckon any celebrity over 60 can expect the worms to come out of the wood, luckily none of my trysts find me famous enough or rich enough to scream rape or some such b****ks… dare you cast the first stone ?….Mad Dilys wrote:Scottishtourist wrote:Wasn't that "Bill Nighy"implicated in some form of sex abuse/scandal a few years ago?

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Bill Cosby definitely has his (ahem) past coming out to bite him. Thirty some women have come forward with mega allegations of improprieties to say the least however the statue of limitations has passed on all of 'em.
Where there is smoke is there really fire? Or does one spark ignite a smoldering pile then have all the others jump on and fan the flame(s) hoping for their day in the media sun in the hopes of furthering their own fame and fortune?

Re: Second best Exotic Marigold Hotel
I think that could well be the case in many of these situations.LovelyLadyLux wrote:

I do not want to make light of the situation for anyone that has been a victim of sexual assault in any way, however the cases that are continually coming to our attention at the moment do sometimes leave as many unanswered questions as they leave suspicions.

It does amaze me, how Jewel put us up on a mountain with here original post, and we all follow her up there, and quickly someone points out the quagmire below us and our attention gets diverted..

Yes, its that easy...
I'm off to firkle with my car, then give it a good wash and clean..
PS I also discovered that by adding 200ml of MINERAL 2 stroke oil mixed with each full tank of diesel has many benefits.
