When I personally discovered Clerkenwell it was a backwater full of empty warehouses with YBA's inhabiting huge spaces.
They were all there Tracy Emin, Sam Taylor, Damien, Matt Collishaw, the Wilson Twins ect, ect.
I found an empty 12,000 sq ft and started paying a peppercorn rent of £1 per annum which eventually rose to £20k per year.
We acquired 5 empty un-rentable council flats now each worth nearly a million quid.
We had a few decent restaurants then, now it is one of the Capitals centre of 'epicurean delights..
We used to have an annual party & fair on Clerkenwell Green until it got to huge.
And our only local celebs were JSP, Dexter Fletcher & Griff Rhys Jones.
Our local pub was where the Landlord thought he would retire to, I told him to forget it Clerkenwell is going huge!
30 years on and posh warehouse apartments go for over £5 million each.
And we have had The Clerkenwell Design week for over 10 years.

Ps: And we get more tourists than Luxor..Not bad for a little bit of ancient London!
