Sad news

Post by gd47 » Tue Sep 03, 2019 2:08 am

Those of you who have been members on here for a few years may remember a prolific and erudite poster called “Wizard”, or Ronnie Knowles-Green.
Very unfortunately, he is at present being treated in Watford General Hospital for terminal cancer.
I have arranged with his consultant to have him transferred to Keech Hospice in Luton as soon as possible (he has been living in Luton since leaving Egypt about five years ago).
He is receiving palliative care in Watford as he collapsed whilst undergoing radiotherapy treatment for his cancer, which his consultant today informed me had “overwhelmed his system”.
He is suffering from delerium, and has only a few lucid moments but during that time he realises he is not alone, as friends and neighbours are visiting him regularly.
Ronnie has enjoyed his new life here albeit for a relatively short time and has had (up until the last few weeks) a happy time...meeting us at least once a week for fish and chips at Wetherspoons (along with a G&T, which he also enjoyed!), “Wiz”ing round the shops on a mobility scooter and generally being the font of all gossip at the lovely sheltered housing complex where he lived!
He is a deeply spiritual person, so I’m sure he would appreciate being in your prayers, irrespective of which deity you may or may not have.
I will, of course, keep you all updated on events.
Best wishes and good health,
George.

Thanks for taking the time to write an update. Poor Wizard! I know the stress on leaving Egypt was huge for him but I'm glad to hear that he found friends who cared in the UK. I shall be mentally sending him all good wishes and when the time comes, I hope it is a peaceful and pain-free time for him.

Sad news indeed.
Wiz cut contact with me soon after he had arrived in the UK but he has often been in my thoughts.
May his remaining time be peaceful and pain free.

I always thought it was a pity he stopped being an active member after he left Egypt, I am sure he would have benefited from keeping up his interactions on here. However please pass on my regards and having experienced dealing with a similar situation with family members I can only hope that his last days are pain free and peaceful.

Further to my original post, it is with great sadness to say that Ronnie died at 5 am this morning.
Regretfully I wasn’t with him at the time but we saw him yesterday and he was comfortable and pain-free...played him his favourite tune (Over the Rainbow) on repeat. Hope he heard it, even though he showed no reaction.
I’ll post funeral details when arrangements have been made.
George.

Once, a regular and prolific poster on Luxor4U, not least in Literery Corner, Wiz brought brought fun, and sometimes controversy to proceedings. He could be something of an enigma to many people.

I recall one evening when our post rankings were pretty much neck and neck, but very close to reaching the highest post statuz at the time. We ended up with a pact that we would both get to a point under that status and then at midnight UK time we would both post at the same time to enter the new rankin at the same time. Seems daft now, but at the time it was fun
Many of my memories of Wiz are from my visits to Luxor. He was always ready to welcome me into his home - brown Betty ready under the cosy ready for a fresh brew. I got to know him, and his extended Egyptian family quite well over the years.
It is unfortunate that during his time in the UK we had not met - other than his arrival. Such is the way of life.

Rest in peace Wiz.

Nice words Hepzibah, thank you. Fablux and I also knew him in the earlier years and visited him on a number of occasions.
A very kind and gentle soul.

rest in peace Ronnie. :)

How very sad! My thoughts are with him and hopefully his spirit has settled in his beloved Egypt now. Bye, Wiz. It was good while it lasted!
