Luxor Traffic Lights, Waste of time?

Post by Chocolate Eclair » Sun Mar 31, 2013 3:42 pm

Having been to Luxor on the motorcycle many times since the Traffic Lights have been working again, I ask the question what is the use of them, being Law Abiding I always stop when they are at red and await them changing to green, only to be laughed at and have people shooting past me or blowing their horns for me to get out of the way and let them through. When they first came on there were Police about keeping an eye on things, now the local people just go about their business as though they are not there, maybe they should be turned off and save electric!

what would happen if you went through the lights on green and another person ignored the lights and went through on red and hit you, if the answer is nothing then they are a complete and utter waste of time and energy.

I think they need time to realise they really can help the traffic flow. Omar didn't really appreciate them until he came to the UK and came back explaining to his fellow Egyptians how organised our traffic is, and how we really do stop at red! Maybe they need to get videos of uk traffic up on Youtube for the Egyptians to see how they are meant to work

As I stated on another post, 90% of Egyptian drivers are colour blind so red is green and green is red.

And the other 10% are just blind.

:) When I was in Gambia in 2000, the country's first traffic light had just been introduced, and it came with a manual so that you at least had a chance to be prepared:

You do have to remember that the Egyptian traffic lights rule follows the non UK system where you can proceed if you are turning right at the junction.
Oh, yes, and you do need to understand Red means stop and Green means go...and not the other way round

When I was last in Luxor - last week - it seemed that the traffic lights were working well - traffic was waiting at them for green etc, and the chaos at many junctions had definitely faded.

The turn right on red rule works well - similarly in many parts of the US, you can turn left on red, if the road is clear which it often is. That would work well in Britain, I'd suggest. The other aspect of the traffic lights here that I like is the countdown clock, so the driver knows how long he has to wait for the lights to change, which helps to smooth traffic flow.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

The only problem with the turn right rule is that any European tourist seeing the little green man flashing to say its safe to walk will step out and get mown down by the right turning traffic :!:

I went to Luxor yesterday, and can confirm that the behaviour of drivers at the traffic lights is extremely good - didn't see a single vehicle jumping the lights.

Yes L in L I was there today and the standard does seem to have improved a little over the past 2 weeks. I do not see how the turn right thing works though because when the pedestrian crossing green man is on the red light is on, therefore anyone going through the red light be it turning right or not contravenes the right of way for the pedestrian.
