Most seem to be getting items on credit these days though (pay monthly).

You need to be careful with B-Tech now for they do not seem to want to honour guarantee's, not a good advert but if things go wrong now withing a 6 week period they do not change, they do not refund, they tell you to contact the manufacturer. Not a very good way of trading at all and a very bad advertisement for B-Tech.

By the way the manufacturers are not much better, they only want to build supply and sell, if things go wrong they do not want to know.

A fancy car or a cheap one, there are ongoing expenses involved in owning one that are beyond the means of most Egyptians, such as gas, license, maintenance. If you can buy any car, you aren't poor, unless you use it as your means of earning a living, such as a taxi driver.

While shopping at KheirZaman and Ragab the last year :? we could often well compare the shabby looking europeans with mostly cheap junk food in their baskets and locals trays full of what not.

I am amazed that taxi drivers on the East Bank daily use their cars even that there are no clients.
In my country - if no clients we would use a public transp to save on fuel. Here - no! They are used to comforts and will not give them up :)

It is just the same on the WB. In the UK I only use a car if I have a heavy load or if there is no public transport available.

In Egypt I blame the subsidies on fuel.

There's this undercurrent in this thread that people in Luxor aren't acting the way some of you think people in a poor country should act and that this is somehow suspicious or morally wrong.

I tend to agree - it seems that many people think that as Egypt is a poor(ish) country, the inhabitants shouldn't have such things! Over the past few months, I've noticed far fewer taxis driving around looking for trade, as it has been hardly worth the cost of benzene. On some days there are only a couple waiting at the ferry.
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

One tank of Benzine gets me from WB to City Centre 5 times at a cost of 16le so cannot complain, this is also why I use a M/C and not a car, and now its fully equipped with panniers i can carry goods and shopping.
