14% Nile Cruise operative with 8% occupancy

Post by newcastle » Sat Apr 16, 2016 1:28 pm

CAIRO: A Tourism Ministry official has warned against a potential “unemployment crisis” among crews of Egypt’s Nile cruises operating between the country’s two top touristic destinations of Luxor and Aswan, calling on concerned bodies to intervene to save the employees amid what he described “unprecedented decline in occupancy rates.”

Only 40 out of 280 cruise liners between the two destinations are still setting sail while the remainder are “moored on the banks of the river awaiting the return of tourists,” Abdel Gawad Amin, Floating Hotels Dept. at the Tourism Ministry was quoted by Youm7 Friday.

“Despite the overall calm in the security situation in the area, the occupancy rate at those 40 operating cruises is 8 percent at the most,” Amin said, adding that most of guests aboard are from Germany, China and Holland.

Amin called on the Ministry of Tourism to develop an immediate plan to compensate the Nile cruises employees most of whom are " casual labour"

Turn them into floating OAP lifetimes cruises with all that goes with it bingo, 60's ageing music stars, wheel chairs and lifts they would make an absolute fortune.
Dead simple and dead cheap as all the boats are now owned by banks and a lot of their owners 'unavailable right now.
I have even perused plans for a floating recording studio on them allowing bands to come with their families and be able to record whist floating up and down to Aswan.
Sell them to countries as prison ships, use them to transport goods from Cairo, sell them as scrap the list is endless... 8)
Ps: mind you getting rid of all those cockroaches could be problematic, due to the ships lengthy 'lay-up time.

Even in the "golden years" there were too many cruise boats chasing the tourists. Same as the caleches and taxis.
Maybe they should look to Egyptair and subsidised flights for a while to try and kick start the action. Mind you it is already too late for this season. They need to be planning for next Winter now. The foreign charter flights take far too long to be rescheduled and by the time they do something else causes a wobble.

I read somewhere that a lot of them have already been moved to other governorates to serve as floating restaurants and wedding halls.

Weddings always seem to create wealth Iv'e noticed in Egypt, I think a more entrepreneurial eye needs to be given to funerals... 8)
I'm quite surprised at this over-site considering the mentation of the egyptian business brain.
