Had a slight panic at the thought of hearing that on New Years Eve/Day...then thankfully remembered I won't be within earshot.

I will invite you all to come and give it a go when your in Luxor next time, even if it's just to get a note out of the chanter. Like them or loathe them, you will then see how difficult it is. Stick to your penny whistles they are easier even kids can get a note from them.

No one's disputing the fact that the bagpipes are a difficult instrument to master.

Whether mastery results in a pleasant musical experience is another matter.

I haven't noticed the great composers of past or present falling over themselves to compose for this instrument.

There are undoubtedly some who find the sound pleasant. Those that don't, and are trapped within earshot, can always plug their ears and concentrate on the bizarre attire and prancing about that seems to accompany any "perfornance".

Look up on Youtube the BADPIPER, RED HOT CHiLLI PIPERS, THE SNAKE CHARMER, CELTICA, you will see how the pipes have come along from the traditional use. People are now playing L Cohens Halleluja, Queens We Will Rock you, Theme from Game of Thrones, AC/DC Thunderstruck and even heavy metel Lamb of God. I could have gone outside and they would have sounded more mellow, you know what its like in side these hollow concrete homes they build. Has anyone ever seen sheet music for bagpipes? they will see why it takes up to 5 years to be proficient.

Derick and Erica shot through the cat flap when it started to play, must of though we had interlopers in the garden, but a good effort. :up

Some stuff sounds OK, I paricularly like 'The Gael' from the film Last of the Mohicans played bt the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, but then again it does have other instruments in it.

One man's passion is another man's pain.
I'm married to a Scottish woman who I love very much, but if bagpipes had been a necessary part of the deal, I would have given her a wide berth though.

Bagpipes are like Opera singers to me, both screech ( although one is in Latin) which makes both indecipherable to me.

PS. What do you throw to a drowning bagpiper ? :tk
His Bagpipes. :cg

And for my politically incorrect joke... :cg

A man in a kilt walks into a pub with a plastic bag under his arms and the bartender asks,
"What's that?"
"Six pounds of Semtex", he answers.
"That's a relief. I thought it was bagpipes."
There's a time for everyone, if they only learn
That the twisting kaleidoscope moves us all in turn.
