Unfortunately it has attracted many children to swim in pools and reservoirs with some tragic results, but lets face it we all did it when we were kids. Saddleworth Moor near Manchester has been ablaze for several days no due to everything being tinder dry.

Good God, it could be a while before Saddleworth get's extinguished, I am sure most of it is a peat bog, and if that's the case and the peat has dried out it could stay alight for some time. I remember on Skye, they used to burn the heather down and underneath if it was peat it would burn and smolder for ages. Have not seen an international news for a while, all you get is local news were I am, so will catch up soon.

A point Gavin Williamson will no doubt emphasise in discussions ahead of the government spending review

It's a pity that lovely new aircraft carrier can't get anywhere near the fire. I believe they have some impressive fire fighting equipment aboard.

I don't think that sending in 100 squaddies to help out is going to stretch the military budget too much. ;)

True.....but have you factored in the cost of deploying the army to man our borders (as regards smugglers and immigrants) post Brexit?

And then there's the cost of training and equipping them to bolster the E&A departments of our hospitals.

It's regularly reported that there's a shortage of police. Are the red caps of the military establishment really so busy that they can't be redeployed to our streets?

We may need ro resurrect conscription to deal with army shortsges.........neatly dealing with the issue of youth crime at a stroke!

#real solutions for real problems

Vote for Gavin !!

Can’t argue with any of that, also instead of pensioning off fat unfit policemen put them on foot patrol or manning the A&E units to deal with all the A-holes that turn up drunk on a weekend, “where there’s a will there’s a way” I’m all for a shoot to kill policy on our borders, so squaddies would be ideal. ;)

Having the country manned and run by the army is a workable model!

Saves all those tiresome debates in parliament.

I expect there are examples I could quote..... ;)

Its a pity they cannot use planes with water tanks to fly over the fire and douse it like they do in the US.

Its over 7 square miles in area and will take weeks or a severe downpour to put it out completely. Maybe if we had the annual wildfires as they do in some parts of America then we would have the planes to do the job, but for now helicopters will have to do. Another large fire approaching the telecom tower at Winter Hill has been put out.
