SKYPE

Post by Chris » Tue Oct 01, 2019 4:52 pm

I am having a problem using Skype (has been OK until 2 days ago) now I can't even download from the internet.

Is anyone else in Luxor having a problem with using Skype. My Provider is TEdata (WE)

I know I'm in the UK but just tried my Skype and got this message:
Update now to continue using Skype

This version of Skype is no longer supported. Get the latest version of Skype to enjoy HD video calls, call recording, @mentions and much more
When I try an update it, it says:
Download of the Skype update failed
Maybe it will work if you uninstall Skype then go to their main website and install the new version.

https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/

If the downloading of other things from the internet do not work, then it looks like you have some other problem.

Skype is notoriously fickle in Egypt, with the regime cutting it off from time to time and interfering periodically.

With the recent protests, maybe they’re tinkering again.

It’s always difficult to tell whether the problem is with a Skype itself or the regime as one person can have trouble...whilst his next door neighbour is unaffected.

still no skype for me. I have tried onto 2 different laptops and and iPad and none of them will let me reach any of the Skype websites. I just get the following message:

An error occurred during a connection to www.skype.com. PR_CONNECT_RESET_ERROR

Have uninstalled Skype on one of the devicies and now cannot get any of the skype websites to download the program on that device

So 3 different types of devicies and no skype.

Is it TeData messing with me or is it something else sinister?

Chris, The error you are getting looks like the Skype website is blocked from your location, as I have no issue connecting from here. We have the same issue with the Italian Government from time to time... :cg

So, I have downloaded the latest installer and put it on my website.
If you click on that link it will invoke the download.

http://www.alderclose.com/Skype-8.52.0.138.exe

You will at least be able to install Skype from that installer, it is 65.4 Mg in size.

Let me know when you have downloaded it so I can delete it.

Hope that helps..

Cheers Chris. I have deleted the installer now.

You may need some VPN software or Skype has banned Egypt if they are not paying a subscription.

I will see what I can find out when I have time. In the meantime Google "VPN software", :-)

A quick google of 'is skype blocked in egypt' seems to indicate that that it is, along with voice calls made over Whatsapp and other social media apps. A VPN should, in theory, get around this, but it seems some of the common VPN ports such as 1194 have also been blocked by Egypt - so a VPN might need to be run on a port such as 443.

It has been blocked in the past...usually at times of civil unrest....but it’s certainly not blocked at the moment,. At least not nationally.

I know several people who were using it last week and I myself was using WhatsApp and FB Messenger on voice calls.

Have you tried Viber?
As far as I'm aware that is still working. Although I've not used it recently, I have a number of friends in Egypt that appear to be on line at some point every day.

Interesting comments. Maybe a specific ISP is responsible for blocking. Or it's not available on mobile data bit is available via the internet.

I did the same search as Alistair and could not find a conclusive answer.

Perhaps it's just certain regions in Egypt. ?Tourist hotspots like Hurgharda I would imagine would not have this ban. It would not look good if thousands of tourists could not contact home.

Still no Skype. But I can get video chat on Facebook. It seems that TeData (WE) may have blocked Skype

Is anyone on the forum using TeData and if so have they had their Skype blocked

Hi Carrie. Is your TeData through a Mobile Internet or a landline Internet? I am on a landline Internet. I called at their office and they now tell me that they think it has been blocked since last Friday (demo day)
