I think I mentioned this on another thread about the time I had my hair cut on Television Street? It's a farily new salon and looks ok from outside so thought I would give it a go. Turns out the woman who owns it is from the West Bank and we know her, which worried me a bit because she was never a hairdresser before she left her husband............ :o
Anyway they assured me the guy who was to cut it ''was from Cairo, don't worry'' Right yeah. He hadn't a clue what I wanted despite full instructions from me (I was a Hairdresser) I ended up stopping him before he did any more damage.Took me ages before I could have a decent cut once home but they said don't worry we change 'stylists' all the time so don't let this put you off it'll be someone different next time you come. :| They didn't charge me and then offered me a job when we come back to live in Luxor !!!! She said come back and have a colour :| Oh yeah right might do
So don't bother going there

I'll stop thinking about having a hair cut. I would really start to scream if someone ruined my hair cutting it too short or something else I didn't ask for.
Better to ruin it myself and only person I can blame for it is me

:))) Well, you can't blame me for being confused! One minute you're talking about your Hijab & bushy hair, then you're in the British Army! Bit of a contrast! Perhaps you could give us a brief 'life story' over in Literary?

Some of the ladies look beautiful in Egyptian make-up but in my opinion lots of them don't. It's too heavy make-up. But of course it's a matter of an opinion. We have been used to lighter make-up here in the west so maybe that's the reason.

I have been married once and was terrified of going to get my make-up done in a beauty salon. I do not want to look any different than I look usually. Yes you go there one time before the wedding day and see how it looks on you (make-up) but I thought I wouldn't like it anyway.

So if I were amanda I would also do my make-up myself. I can imagine it is one of the most horrible feelings if you notice in a beauty salon on your wedding day that you hate your make-up.

She was so pretty before make-up:

Gosh, I wouldn't go and get my hair done in that salon :o my hair is bad enough without that fire thing....

Exactly my thought. An Egyptian guy said my hair looks so fine and that would I bring next time some hair conditioner to his wife because her hair is in bad condition  I swear i could smell something burning when the hairdresser was doing all those hairs that day.

JOJO you wouldn't believe what they do to someones hair in one sitting :(
First they blow dry it to within an inch of it's life (smoke a go go) Then they put it in rolllers (nice and tight, lots of tension on the old roots) and shove them under a nice HOT dryer. Then they heat up the marcel wavers and curl and twist and back comb and stick in adornments if it's for a wedding :) Bit more red hot tongs around the more awkward bits and lots of spray and back combing. And hey presto......it resembles a (abandoned) birds nest.
still does'nt stay in though

I wish!!!

The only person I know that's been professionally trained is Mervat who owns the Habiba Salon (previously called Mervat) on the lower corniche.

Having said that, her salon still does a brisk trade using the fire irons!! :)
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure...

Fire irons are popular up here too - even in the best salons!

I must confess - I chickened out last week - couldn't find anyone to come to the hairdressers and hold my hand - so I took the scissors out and hacked a lump off myself!
