CAIRO – 18 October 2017: The Egyptian government approved on Wednesday the new traffic law, Transport Minister Hesham Arafat said in a press conference at the cabinet headquarters.
This law is expected to contribute to reducing the frequency of fatal accidents, avoiding traffic errors in large cities, and extending penalties for violations of the law.
The new law suggests establishing a points system. The license holder will be given 30 points. With each violation, he/she loses a point or more.
When all points are deducted, the driver’s license is suspended for 30 days. To get the license back, the driver must enroll in an accredited driving school to learn more about the traffic laws.
Upon exceeding the speed limit, there are four penalties depending on the travelled distance. The maximum fine is LE 500 ($28), and the driver would lose 2-5 points as a penalty.
In case of using speed camera detectors, the driver loses 5 points as a penalty, in addition to the fine.
All drivers will be exposed to a substance abuse detection test before taking the driving license. If the driver is proved that he is a drug user, he will be deprived from the license permanently, according to a security source.
He added that the drivers must pass a training course to learn the basics of safe driving in one of the driving schools that is accredited from General Directorate of Traffic.

30 points starting credit seems excessive. A repeat offender would have to be pretty unlucky to rack up that score!
The drug screening is of limited value as cannabis is undetectable in saliva or blood within a few days, even with a regular user. If, however, the test is performed on hair it would probably clear Egypt's roads within a few months
It's good to see that the government is paying some attention to the dreadful road traffic accident statistics. Whether the new law will have any impact ...I doubt.

Re: New Traffic Law
An accredited driving school in Egypt, now there's a novelty. I bought a chicken the other week and they had forgotten to remove its teeth. 30 points would take the average driver in Luxor a week to rack up. What about the use of mobiles or nostril harvesting while driving? But there is always a positive side, MT will be very happy to see that changes are coming to the roads of Egypt.

We live in hope, but the laws have to be upheld by the police to be valid.

Yes a good idea "D" I am sure everyone will agree, however WI has the correct idea who will Police it and what will be the cost to locals to avoid a point deduction, ie how much backsheesh will a local have to pay to get away with a points deduction. We have heard these wild and wonderful ideas but with out Policing they are just stardust. However if there are some intelligent people about the Police should become extremely rich.
