Egyptian actress Rania Youssef could face jail after wearing revealing dress.
An Egyptian actress could face up to five years in prison after being charged with public obscenity for wearing a see-through dress which revealed the entirety of her legs.
Rania Youssef, who is aged in her 30s, had been attending the closing ceremony of a film festival in Cairo when she was pictured on Thursday in the black ensemble, which raised eyebrows.
The piece comprises of black leotard covered by a transparent overdress with criss-cross detailing and a large bow belt.
Youssef is set to stand trial on 12 January after a group of lawyers filed a complaint to the chief prosecutor.
She now faces up to five years in prison if she is convicted.
Egypt is a largely conservative country with a majority Muslim population. It has retained some of its secularism despite decades of growing religious conservatism.
In 2016, Egyptian author Ahmed Naji was handed a two-year prison sentence after being charged with obscenity for publishing a book with references to sex and drugs.
Prosecutors said he "violated public modesty" with his novel The Use Of Life but was soon released and his sentence was suspended following an appeal to a Cairo court.

I can't see this going too far legal-wise. But another shot in the foot by some extreme prudes which only makes Egypt a laughing stock.
I was watching an old movie on Egyptian TV the other day featuring quite a long scene of a belly dancer.....tits and a*se flashing.....which wouldn't have looked out of place in a Soho sex club.
They really are a bunch of hypocrites

Have a look at the comments on social media....such as Egyptian Streets.
If the idiot who made an official complaint about this - and the authorities who are pursuing it - think they are "protecting Egypt's image" they've made a terrible mistake!
They've added to the image of Egypt being a backward, intolerant misogynistic society which cares more about dress norms than human rights, poverty etc. etc.

You might not be familiar with the name of Sherine Abdel Wahab, but she is a judge on the Egyptian version of The Voice,........any way, she recently cracked a joke in public about the fact that you should not drink the Nile water in Cairo for obvious reasons,........... Charged and appeared in court,........sentenced to six months in prison. Apparently out on bail at the moments while the court receives further 'information'.
Like I often remind this forum,.......if you live in Egypt, respect the rules, what ever they may be,........or may become. .

After a grovelling apology from the actress, the case against Rania has been dropped.
The artist Rania Youssef presented an apology to the Egyptian family and society for this incident and its affirmation that it was not intentional, that it was placed in circumstances beyond its control and that the behavior was wrong and unintentional,” the statement read.

In the febrile climate of Egypt....polarised between those who want to modernise and those who will persecute vigorously any infringement of what they see as "Egyptian values"....I can sympathise with Rania's decision to swallow her pride and dispense with the case.
My views?.........pass the sick bucket....
