Stork Held In Egypt On Suspicion Of Spying

A stork has been detained by police in Egypt on suspicion of spying.

The bird was put behind bars after a man fishing in the Nile in Qena, some 280 miles south-east of Cairo, spotted an electronic device attached to its feathers.

Thinking it was an undercover agent, he captured the stork and took it to a police station near his home, said Mohammed Kamal, head of security in the Qena region.

Puzzled officers examined the bird, fearing the gadget was a bomb or spying equipment, and then called in veterinary experts.

Eventually, they discovered it was a wildlife tracker used by French scientists to follow the movement of migratory birds, said Ayman Abdallah, head of veterinary services in Qena.

He said the device stopped working when the bird crossed the French border, absolving it of being a spy.

But he said it would have to remain in police custody for the time being because officials need permission from state prosecutors to release the bird.

Commentators said that with turmoil gripping Egypt following the military coup that overthrew President Mohammad Morsi, authorities and citizens remain on high alert.

Earlier this year, a security guard filed a police report after capturing a pigeon he said was carrying microfilm.

In 2010, a series of shark attacks along Egypt's Mediterranean coast were blamed on "GPS-controlled sharks" allegedly sent by Israeli security services into Sinai waters.

In the Sunday Mirror today, not a rag I would normally look at but it was hanging on a peg in the toilet, the bird was described as a swan. There is one hell of a difference between storks and swans, and I don't recall seeing swans in upper Egypt.

I first saw it reported as a DUCK, then it was reported as a SWAN, then it was reported as a STORK. I am expecting it to have been an ALBATROSS by the time tomorrow's papers are delivered!

Whatever type of feathered creature it was/is - the identifiers are all quackers as far as I can tell!

On Saturday, August 31st, news surfaced over the capture of a White Stork in Qena, referred to over social media as #SpyDuck, after concerned citizens suspected the stork was a tool of espionage because of the satellite tracking device attached to its back. Security apparatuses have already declared that this device poses no threat to Egypt's security, and a report is to be produced by a governmental veterinary committee.

Nature Conservation Egypt (NCE) has been contacted by the concerned Hungarian researchers responsible for tagging the "detained" White Stork, and they have provided (the already public) information on the specific stork in question.

Satellite tagging of birds is an internationally acknowledged practice used by researchers and conservationists to study the migration routes of birds. These results are then commonly used to influence local policies, to ensure the protection of migratory birds, particularly soaring birds, during their migration from north to south in Autumn, and south to north in Spring.

NCE is currently following up with the different administrative entities in Egypt to ensure that the necessary steps are taken for the release of this White Stork

It's interesting that so many people claim not to use Facebook and yet know exactly what is being written and where and by whom. Equally. many people refuse to use it and yet are very keen for information others are prepared to share from there!

No you don't Keefy! Open posts can be seen by anyone, it pops up an option to join but you can ignore it & just read anyway. I don't think you can comment or anything without joining. I certainly don't do facebook but still follow the odd Twitter link to posts & read what is there.
