Temple priests in many countries used to watch the sky at night for the first sighting of a new moon. I was at the temple of Stella this evening. The New Moon was less than 31 hours old shortly after sunset and before it disappeared behind the Theban hills.
You can just about make it out in the first picture, near the bottom. The brighter spot near the top is Venus.
A couple of months ago someone posted pictures of the moon with details of how they were taken - I've done a search but can't find the topic. Any help appreciated.
