Chinese Tourism Growth & New Tourism Strategy

Post by Hafiz »

Chinese tourism is growing fast but as usual the politicians take some promising signs and turn them into a tidal wave (‘shortly’) that will save tourism in Egypt. Read the following article together with the Chinese tour guide comment that they don’t worry too much about security.

“During a recent interview with Xinhua (Chinese media), former Egyptian Tourism Minister, Hisham Zaazou, said that Egypt received 35 percent additional tourists from China immediately following president Xi’s visit to Egypt.

“The number of Chinese tourists increased from 65,000 to 135,000 in 2015,( this is 100%)” Zaazou said, adding that he believes the number could rise to between half a million and a million shortly, once flights from China to Egypt increase.

Yang (a Chinese leader of a tourist group) said Chinese tourists were very scared to visit Egypt at first due to the country’s political and security situation, but they were encouraged following the Chinese president’s visit earlier this year.“We don’t worry too much about security as it is very safe here, and not as dangerous as the news portrays it,” she said.”

The Government has a new ‘plan’ for growing tourism which surprisingly fails to mention the t (terrorism) or s (security) words and includes some unbelievable six month targets and turgid prose. Maybe it reads better in Arabic. They also fail to mention improvements in infrastructure, administrative red tape and the other problem areas which are often identified in independent international comparisons. The same comparisons rate Egypt as one of the most unsafe destinations on earth.

‘Rashed (Minister of Tourism) has detailed the the six main priorities of the plan (for growth in tourism) which include the following:

1) A New Partnership: The plan calls for Egypt to work with international tourism partners to restore success.
2) Bring the World to Egypt: According to Rashed, it is important to begin working in partnership with EgyptAir to develop new destinations and to support charter and low-cost airline companies in bringing more tourists to Egypt.
3) Innovation and Investment: Rashed’s plan includes enhancing Egypt's tourism infrastructure by supporting investors and innovating with new ideas.
4) Raise the Bar: The new plan looks to meet the highest international standards through upgraded product and service levels at tourist facilities.
5) Attract International Investment: The plan calls for working to bring foreign direct investment to Egyptian tourism.
6) A Future in Green Tourism: In the plan, the country would like to develop the growing trend in Egyptian tourism of sustainable, eco-friendly accommodation, transportation and activities.

in regards to this new proposal, Rashed said: “The commitment to see these six priority areas have an impact over a six-month time frame is very ambitious. But I am also ambitious for our tourism sector. I want to see positive action and for that action to have an immediate impact. 6x6 allows us to focus our energies on the most important elements.” This chap has more ambition than a pharaoh."This is the start of an exciting time and opportunity for Egyptian tourism," said Rashed. "This will return Egypt to being one of the most sought after places to visit in the world.”

Egypt's tourism problems could be ameliorated significantly if action on any of the issues matched the rhetoric.

Unfortunately, if the past is anything to go by, it won't.

Egyptian ministers seem to have a million a year attached to everything. Pity no one holds them to account. Here is another million a year promise from 2014:

"Minister of Tourism Hisham Zaazou signed on Wednesday an agreement with a number of Indian travel companies to encourage a target of 1 million tourists to Egypt by the end of 2017."

Clearly no one is held to account for these pharaonic promises. Readers might have read another post where the minister prophesied a million from China. With all these promises 2017 will be a boom year. Do middle class Egyptians believe these press releases?
