Former anti-corruption head assaulted

Post by newcastle »

Former Egyptian chief auditor Hisham Geneina has been attacked.....apparently

CAIRO (Reuters) - A leading member of an opposition campaign which was until this week challenging Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in upcoming elections was attacked outside his home on Saturday in what his lawyer described as a failed kidnap attempt.

Hisham Genena, a former anti-corruption watchdog chief, had been working to elect former military chief-of-staff Lieutenant General Sami Anan, the last challenger seen as a potential threat to the re-election of Sisi in polls slated for March.

Anan’s campaign was abruptly halted after he was arrested this week and accused of running for office without military permission.

Anan’s family said late on Saturday that he is being held at a military prison, without providing any details.

His lawyer, Nasser Amin, said on his Twitter account that he had visited his client there.

Genena had just left his home in a suburb outside Cairo when two cars stopped him and a group of men attacked with knives and sticks, Anan’s spokesman, Hazem Hosny, told Reuters.

Security sources said the alleged attackers were questioned at a police station along with Genena just after the incident.

The Interior Ministry could not be immediately reached for comment.

Pictures later posted on social media and verified by Genena’s family show him with a badly battered eye and a blood-soaked bandage wrapped around his knee.

His lawyer, Ali Taha, told Reuters that Genena was taken to a hospital to be treated for a bleeding eye and several fractures.

“It was a failed kidnapping attempt..(it) was stopped when bystanders interfered,” said Taha.

“They were trying to kill him,” his wife, Wafaa Kedieh, told Reuters.

As Egypt’s top auditor, Genena had stirred controversy by publicly concluding that government corruption had cost the country billions of dollars. He was sacked by Sisi in 2016.

Last week an army statement read on state TV said Anan’s presidential bid amounted to “a serious breach of the laws of military service” because as a military officer he was required to end his service and get permission before seeking office.

Egypt Independent put a slightly different spin on it :

Egypt’s interior ministry did not release any official statement. However, local media outlets are quoting anonymous interior ministry officials stating that Saturday’s attack took place following a “road accident

There are, of course, frequent "road accidents" in Egypt. :urm:

Just goes to show a vote for corruption is a yes vote, we still want it please.... The Justice system needs to stamp it out with big sentences and heavy fines. That's if you can find someone interested.

Its good to see that they are keeping the reelection campaign clean. It will help those slightly illiterate voters considerably, having only one candidate box to choose from, against struggling to read many names and what they stand for.

"Road Accidents" are also very frequent in Russia - if you are an independent journalist or an opposition politician. They are often fatal and the perpetrators never found.

Wonder whether the perps. will be found in this case by the million man police force and their hundreds of thousands of paid informers.

There's a couple of narratives doing the rounds.

1. Geneina's assertion that it was a premeditated attack on him....for motives to do with his political stance.

2. The 'official' line - that it was a road accident, with a subsequent altercation between the participants resulting in Geneina's injuries.

I wouldn't care to judge at this stage.

The plot thickens......

Egyptian security forces have arrested the former head of Egypt’s Central Auditing Organization (CAO) Hisham Geneina on Tuesday, media outlets reported citing Geneina’s lawyer Ali Taha.

Besides being the former head of CAO, Geneina also was set to be the vice president of former presidential hopeful and ex-general Sami Anan.

The arrest came a few hours after the Armed Forces had released a statement in response to press statements made by Geneina to the HuffPost Arabic. Geneina revealed in his press statements that Anan is in possession of documents against the military leaders and the current regime, further threatening that these documents will be released if Anan got assassinated during his imprisonment.

In response, the military said that Geneina’s statements aim at stirring suspicions against the state and its institutions, particularly in a time when the Armed Forces is combating terrorism in North Sinai. The statement further stressed that it will use all its constitutional and legal rights to take the necessary procedures against Geneina and Anan.

Conversely, Anan’s lawyer Nasser Amin stated that Geneina’s comments are baseless and false, further adding that he will take legal procedures against anyone who makes press statements citing Anan.

Anan, a retired Army Chief of Staff and a former member of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF), announced on January 20 his intention to run for the 2018 presidential elections, scheduled for March 26-28. However, he was arrested after the Armed Forces had announced that his presidential bid declaration is a violation of the military rules.

An aide to former Egyptian presidential hopeful General Sami Anan، Hesham Geneina claimed in an interview to Huffington post Arabic، that the ex-military commander is in possession of "dangerous" top-secret files kept outside the country that would be released if he is harmed.

Yet، Anan’s lawyer، Nasser Amin announced through his official account on social network “Facebook” that Geneina’s statements are baseless، stressing that Anan has nothing to do with such statements، adding that he will take the needed legal procedures to prevent anyone giving away statements on the behalf of his client in the future.

For his part، Anan’s son refuted Geneina’s allegations، assuring that he contacted his family’s lawyer to file a report against Geneina، accusing him of inciting a social strife in Egypt amid a war against terrorism.

Moreover، Egypt army will investigate into Hesham Geneina’s statements، Military Spokesman، Tamer el-Refai announced in an official statement issued yesterday، Monday.

el-Refai added that these statements drive a wedge between the Egyptian Army and the citizens amid a war against terrorism، adding that the Army will act according to its right granted by the constitution.
