Details emerge about Italian student Murdered in Egypt

Regini was reportedly arrested and beaten by Egyptian police because they thought he was a British spy. The 28-year-old Italian student was on an exchange program in Egypt while studying at Cambridge University and disappeared while on his way to the Cairo Metro Station.

His body was found four days later beaten and bloodied. It's believed he was severely tortured during the ordeal.

The testimony was brought to light after a witness overheard an Egyptian intelligence agent speaking about the matter at a police convention in an unnamed African country in 2017.

It was related back to Italian prosecutors who believe this testimony to be credible enough and have since asked Egyptian authorities for more information, AFP reported.

According to La Republica, the unnamed source had found out the Egyptian agent's name after a colleague had exchanged business cards with the man.

For the last three years, Egypt has denied that its security services were involved in the death of Rajani. At first she claimed that he had been killed in a car accident, but then changed her version and claimed that a gang of criminals had murdered him and that later this gang had been eliminated in a shootout with police officers.

Italy recalled its ambassador to Egypt in April 2016 following the Egyptians lack of cooperation with Italian forces, however, a new ambassador was reinstated in 2017.

On Sunday, the Italian Foreign Ministry tweeted that it "supports the Rome prosecutor's request for information, in the strong hope that it contributes to the path of justice for Giulio Regeni."

I can’t see that an overheard (and presumably unrecorded) conversation adds much to this sad saga.

The world at large has come to the conclusion (in the absence of any plausible alternative explanation) that Regeni died at the hands of some part of the Egyptian security apparatus....and don’t expect the Egyptian denials to be distracted by hearsay.
