Hormoheb Hotel Cairo

Post by Who2 »

Upon rereading my old books on Egypt this popped into my mind.
The Hormoheb Hotel.

Many years ago I went shopping in Cairo with my hotel owning pal.
He said that he had once stayed in this hotel for a year, "Why ? I asked.
"It has 7 bars, qed"

It is quite an old established hotel that caters for mainly Upper Egyptians,
businessmen from Luxor and it's surroundings.
Lots of galabia wearing men. It also had quite a few 'working girls wandering around the place.

There were actually 7 bars, 2 were closed due to weddings taking place.
The 1st bar we entered was run by what appeared to be Russian female wrestlers.
Stella's were 50le my mate said "f... that the price has gone up" La whalla!...

On the ground floor was a shisha type bar open to passing trade and cheaper beers.
In the evening we went to a large discoteque in it's basement, populated by trendy young Cairenes.

There was a bank and a very busy restaurant where everybody knew everybody else all from upper Egypt.
Now, I know you are going to ask the same question, that I put to the receptionist ?

Everything is labeled The Hormoheb Hotel even on it's napkins.
The pretty receptionist answered my question with "Only a very few visiting tourists ask that question ?
"So what was my Question ?..... 8)

Ps: The place was cockroach infested, a small point...
Pss: The receptionists' classic answer ? "
Spoiler
"We couldn't be bothered to change the name, and they have yet to discover Hormoheb"

What did stir my mind whilst there was, all the alabaster objects sold in Cairo shops and bazaars all
originate from Luxor alabaster factories.
Which obviously make for some very very wealthy West Bank Luxurians.... 8)

Looked it up, can't say it's somewhere I would want to stay but certainly sounds interesting. Perhaps Dusak would like it there seems to be a lot of friendly welcoming females to cheer one up.

No need to shlepp all the way to Cairo......or is the Lotus Hotel closed? ;)

Incidentally, it’s proper name is the Hor Moheb Hotel...you occasionally find this transliteration of the 18th dynasty pharaoh in egyptology texts. It wasn’t a mistake.

We have a similarly named hotel in Hurghada...the Hor Palace. Needless to say, a name which attracts ribald remarks....and possibly a clientele like the Hor Moheb :)

I went with a friend to the Duty Free shop, when it was near the Egyptian souk, only to find it was closed, but due to open in one hour.
Rather than go home and come back later we decided to go and have a coffee.
I was fairly new to Luxor then.
Well we popped into the Lotus Hotel, it said outside that it was an hotel so OK.
What a sleezy, dirty place that was you actually stuck to the carpet when you tried to walk over it. Once seen never forgotten and an experience never to be repeated.

I've stayed at the Horemheb a few nights. Then I headed off to Khan El Khaliki. There is a Hotel up from the Horemheb in the direction of the pyramids if this is the same Horemheb on Pyramid Street. That Hotel is the Kinow. Basic but comfortable but they don't supply hot water. Prices then shot up 200%. The area has a good few places to eat such as Pizza Hut. I found a great cafe, quite big with cheap Wi-Fi and over the road a Juice bar where I tasted my first Egyptian Ice-cream. It was there I had my first Fakfakhina. And second right after. Friendly people.
