Yarra Market, again

Post by BENNU » Thu Nov 15, 2012 6:51 pm

After some bad experiences in the past at Yarra Market near the ferry on the West Bank I have been shopping there again now and then. I have accepted paying more than in the local shops, when it has been convenient, appreciating that the rent must be high.

Today I bought a few things the usual Yarra price of which I knew and expected to pay up to EGP 40 depending on their price of cheese. In other shops what was in the basket would amount to less than EGP 35. I was asked EGP 55.

I had seen how she entered 12 in the calculator for something with the price 10,00 hand written on it and 18 for the cheese. I protested and the second time she changed it to 10 + 20 instead of 12 + 18 apparantly regarding me a complete idiot. I said that I normally pay so and so much for the different items in this particular shop, she pretended to agree but the sum remained the same because now suddenly the cheese was 27, and if that was too much for me, I could get a smaller pack.

It is cheaper for me to take a taxi to any other shop and tip the driver for waiting and carrying my bags and noone will suggest that I am cheap or cannot afford to buy some slices of cheese. It was a good, hardcore aged romy and it cost me EGP 100 pr kg, but it cost them a customer.

I only ever used them once and wasn't happy about prices

there are a number of others that can be used

Sorry to hear of your bad experience Bennu. :( We stopped using Yara after just 2 visits when it first opened. Mona or Atta the baker both do quite a wide range of products now, including roumi so may be a better option for you?

Ditto. Ive found in the past when I did use them the minimum overcharge was 25% and is some cases 100%.

Anyone complained to the owners at Yarra? I used to find the daytime women assistants seemed to whack a bit on the prices (an Egyptian friend told me: "They are saving for their weddings!"). But the evening guys are fine, which is when I go now. It's a "convenience store" ... the service buses stop right outside and it's on my way to the "pub"!

Without wishing to be seen as a blatant sexist, I agree with Tony - it's not just at Yarra but at several other shops here that the girls in the shop often overcharge whereas the men - often the owners - don't seem to. Maybe they are saving to get married!
I might agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong!

No Ive been overcharged by the owners as well. When I complained he just shrugged his shoulders and said "thats the price here".

I agree, too, and this does not only happen at Yarra or on the cheap and cheerful side! The first year I would look through the door everytime I passed on my way to the ferry, ready to talk to the man who had been very fair and welcoming the first time, but I gave up and stopped going there.

Once I joined a friend who wanted to buy something there, another man was professional enough to treat me as a potential regular customer. He did this in such a friendly and correct manner that I have stopped there whenever it was convenient. Because of the location I have accepted a higher price on my way from the ferry, rather than bringing things across the river or having the taxi stop on my way, when I just wanted to go home.

There was a man at the counter, I do not know what his job was, but I complained to him that the cheese in two minutes had gone from EGP17 to EGP20 to finally cost EGP27, so that I could get the other items at the usual Yarra price and she could still get EGP55. He pointed at the tooth paste and said: "It is ten, look!" Yes, but she had asked for twelve, and when confronted changed the price on anything else in front of this man who had lend her the calculator! He ignored me!

I, too, am saving to get married, but I am not ready to pay the local rate for that!

I have to agree with Stan on this, the vast majority of overcharges are given by the women. I asked my female Egyptian friend, who has suffered the same overcharging by women, why do they do it? Her reply was that they needed the money to constantly top up their mobile phones, which you must have noticed, are never detached from their ear holes whether serving or not. :moby:
