"The Egyptian Antiquities Ministry is calling the find, made near the ruins of Ramses II's temple in the ancient city of Heliopolis, one of the most important discoveries ever."

A bit OTT methinks

It's been all over the news here.

I agree it is a bit OTT, especially as many much better and intact statues of this Pharaoh exist elsewhere, unless of course the whole thing is still in the ground and they intend to put it all back together again.

Good to hear the statue is probably Psamtik I rather than Ramesses II.

Statues of Psamtik are rare whilst we have enough colossi of Ramesses II to fill a football stadium :urm:

I was thinking the same as you Newcastle :up we could do with a few new ones, after all old Ramesses was quite prolific, in more ways than one ;)

Probably usurped from Ramesses II, who may have usurped it from Amenhotep III. I hope that they recover the base, where there are probably more inscriptions.
